TV-Series
Description
Gen Sasaki, known affectionately to others as Gatchan, is a recurring supporting character in Wangan Midnight. He is a much-maligned figure within the series, often regarded as a source of comic relief rather than a serious competitor on the Wangan. His background is that of an enthusiastic amateur racer with a deep passion for customizing his car, though his approach to both driving and tuning is frequently the subject of ridicule from more serious characters.

Personality-wise, Gatchan is obnoxious, loud, and brimming with misplaced confidence. He is known for frequently bragging about the incredible upgrades he has made to his vehicle, often with the explicit goal of psyching out his opponents before a race. Despite his often arrogant and boastful demeanor, he is not portrayed as malicious; rather, his behavior stems from an earnest, albeit naive, love for street racing and his own creation. He has a tendency to make poor social judgments, as demonstrated during his first encounter with the skilled driver Reina, whom he embarrassed by mistaking for a call girl.

His primary motivation appears to be a desire for recognition and respect on the Wangan, wanting to prove that his customized car can compete with the purpose-built racing machines that dominate the highways. However, his approach to achieving this goal is fundamentally flawed. Gatchan drives a Toyota Celsior, a luxury sedan he proudly calls the Super Celsior. The car is outfitted with flashy aesthetic modifications including underbody lighting, fancy emblems, and dark window tinting. Unlike the other racers who strip their cars of all non-essential weight, he notably keeps the air conditioner, radio, and back seat. While he is acknowledged to be a pretty good driver, his skills and his car are simply no match for the high-performance vehicles he challenges, and he gets clobbered every time he goes up against something built specifically to race.

In the story, Gatchan serves a specific role as a foil to the more talented and dedicated racers. His repeated failures highlight the immense gap in skill and machine capability between an enthusiastic amateur and the elite of the Wangan. He is often seen accompanying other characters, such as Yamamoto, and his interactions with the community are central to his role. Beyond his public rivalries, his key relationship is with his wife, Yumeko Sasaki, who makes brief appearances in the anime and the arcade game series. There is little to no evidence of significant character development for Gatchan; he remains a static, comedic figure who consistently overestimates his abilities only to be swiftly and soundly defeated. His notable abilities, therefore, lie not in winning races but in his unwavering enthusiasm, his skill as a conversational braggart, and his comedic persistence.
