Description
Kaien Cross is the headmaster of Cross Academy and a figure whose cheerful and eccentric demeanor belies a complex and dark history. As the adoptive father of Yuki Cross and guardian of Zero Kiryu, he is the primary architect of the school's unique environment, which includes a Night Class for vampire students and a Day Class for human students, a system he established to promote peace and understanding between the two species.

Physically, Kaien appears to be a man in his mid-twenties, though he is in fact over two hundred years old. He has long, straw-colored hair that he typically wears in a ponytail and is often seen in peculiar clothing, such as oversized lion-feet slippers and colorful hats, and he frequently wears glasses. His youthfulness and extended lifespan are due to an unusually high amount of vampire genetic material in his DNA. This unique heritage makes him an anomaly among vampire hunters, causing him to emanate an aura similar to a vampire's and granting him abilities that earned him the legendary title of the "Vampire without Fangs" during his prime.

His personality is a striking contrast of light and shadow. On the surface, Kaien is known for his cheerful personality, odd quirks, and dramatic, tearful outbursts, especially when lamenting his perceived failures as a parent. He is playful to the point of absurdity, often cooking bizarre meals for his charges and playfully teasing Zero about his vampiric nature, all while ignoring Zero's clear irritation. This lighthearted and sometimes thoughtless behavior serves as a mask, making him a source of comic relief and causing others to underestimate his intelligence and resolve. Behind this facade, however, lies a deeply serious, protective, and principled man. He is highly intelligent and a skilled strategist, capable of becoming stoic and stern when serious situations arise. He often withholds the full truth to protect Yuki and Zero, keeping their darkest secrets, such as Zero's transformation into a vampire and Yuki's true origins as a pureblood, hidden from them for years.

Kaien's primary motivation is his dream of a peaceful coexistence between humans and vampires. This ideal was not innate but was instilled in him by the pureblood vampire Juri Kuran. Years ago, as a cold-blooded hunter, Kaien had agreed to hunt a pregnant Juri. She defeated him with ease but spared his life and eventually became his friend. Her forgiveness and her vision for a future without conflict inspired him to abandon his former life, retire from being a hunter, and dedicate himself to establishing Cross Academy. Following the deaths of Juri and her husband Haruka, the pureblood Kaname Kuran entrusted their daughter Yuki to Kaien, who adopted her. He also took in Zero Kiryu after the murder of Zero's parents, attempting to adopt him as well, though Zero refused. Kaien's primary role in the story is as an observer and defender of his dream, often leaving the day-to-day enforcement of school rules to Yuki and Zero while he watches from the background.

His key relationships are central to his character. As a father figure, he is doting, proud, and fiercely protective of Yuki, while his relationship with Zero is more complex; he views Zero as a son, despite Zero's resistance, and his playful ribbing masks a deep concern for the young man's fate. He shares a profound, unbreakable bond with Kaname Kuran, built on a shared past and a mutual debt, as Kaien knows Kaname's parents and feels indebted to them for his life and his dream. He remains a close friend of the pureblood Isaya Shouto and has a deep respect for his former colleague, the hunter Touga Yagari. As a former vampire hunter, Kaien is exceptionally powerful. His abilities include wielding an anti-vampire sword hidden in a cane, possessing an acute sense of smell to detect vampires, and having the physical prowess to fight and kill high-level vampire threats, including a corrupted president of the Hunter's Association.

Over the course of the story, Kaien's role develops from a seemingly passive, comic relief headmaster into a key active participant. For the first half of the narrative, he largely observes events, intervening only when necessary to protect the Night Class. However, when the Hunter's Association turns against the school, he takes a direct role in the action, fighting to defend the vampire students. He is taken into custody by the Hunters after the battle, but later returns, having also become the head of the Vampire Hunters Association. In this new capacity, he works to maintain the fragile peace, recruit Zero as his successor, and navigate the increasingly dangerous political landscape between the two races. Towards the end of his life, decades later, his health deteriorates, but he remains active in pursuing peace until he is fatally wounded while protecting others, ultimately rejecting the chance to become a vampire and choosing to die as a human.
