Hozumi Gōda

Description
Hozumi Gōda is a Japanese voice actor, narrator, and sound director. He was born on August 22, 1957, in Tokyo and is affiliated with the talent agency Ogipro The Next. He began his entertainment career after graduating from the Shonan Actors School and winning a prize in a voice actor contest held by Nippon Broadcasting System in 1982. In 1983, he formed the three-man comedy team Kaibutsu Land with friends from a small theater company, and they found success on variety television programs.

Gōda made his debut as a voice actor in 1982 and achieved his first major role in 1983 as Chirico Cuvie in the seminal real robot anime series Armored Trooper Votoms. This character became a defining role of his career, which he has reprised in numerous OVAs and films over the decades, including The Last Red Shoulder, Big Battle, Pailsen Files, and Phantom Arc. Following a period focused on his comedy work, he returned to voice acting with renewed vigor. A significant milestone was being chosen to succeed the late Tomiyama Kei as the voice of Yang Wen-li in the OVA series Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gaiden starting in 1998.

Throughout his career, Gōda has built an extensive and varied filmography. He is well-known to fans for his role as Leorio in the 1999 version of Hunter X Hunter, a part he also performed in stage musicals based on the series. Other notable anime roles include Lio Convoy in Transformers: Beast Wars II, John Claude Magnum in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters, Mamoru Inoue in The Prince of Tennis, Vincent Alzey in Last Exile, Headmaster Cross in Vampire Knight, Ijuuin Kyō in the Junjo Romantica series, and the Roman Empire in Hetalia: Axis Powers. In the 2020s, he has continued to take on diverse roles, such as Asu in Dorohedoro, Guren Soshigaya in Gibiate, King Byogen in Healin' Good Pretty Cure, and the Narrator in Cop Craft. He also demonstrated his versatility by voicing the character Popuko for one segment of the surreal comedy Pop Team Epic.

Beyond animation, Gōda has an extensive career in dubbing foreign films and television dramas. He is particularly known as the consistent Japanese voice of actor David Thewlis, including his portrayal of Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter film series. His other notable dubbing roles include Simon Baker as Patrick Jane in The Mentalist, Jeff Daniels in various films like The Martian and Steve Jobs, and George Clooney in The Monuments Men.

In addition to his on-screen work, Gōda is also an accomplished sound director. He founded the Shonan Actors School in 2000 to train new talent and has overseen the sound direction for numerous anime series. His credits as a sound director include When They Cry (Higurashi), Junjo Romantica, Vampire Knight, The Tower of Druaga, and Cop Craft. His multifaceted career also includes work in stage musicals and drama CDs.
