Description
Akio Shibakiyama, born Kaoru Sayama, leads the Shibakiyama Stable as its Oyakata (Person Like Father). His birth name Kaoru Sayama etymologically combines "fragrance" (Kaoru) with "cramped, narrow mountain" (狭山 - Sayama). His wrestling name Kaoruyama similarly merges "fragrance" and "mountain".

Physically, he stands at 172 cm and weighs 145 kg, with grey hair and blood type O. Born December 26th, he is 49 years old pre-timeskip and 52 post-timeskip. His non-sumo hobby is ballroom dancing.

During his active career under the epithet "Firecracker", Shibakiyama employed a head-on style defined by forceful headbutts (buchikamashi) and low driving techniques, prioritizing direct physical confrontation. He trained directly under former yokozuna Shunkai Tokio, forging a lasting master-disciple bond.

As stable master, his coaching champions simplicity, conciseness, and flexibility. He demonstrates openness to unconventional talent, initially doubting Hinomaru Ushio's short stature but accepting him after witnessing his skill against other wrestlers. He actively advances Hinomaru's career by arranging specialized training with sekitori Norihiro Saenoyama and facilitating instruction from Shunkai. His stable serves as a pre-national tournament training ground for Odachi High School's sumo club.

His mentorship extends to key wrestlers including Hinomaru and Saenoyama, whose initial dismissal of Hinomaru evolved into mutual respect through Shibakiyama's influence. He maintains a professional, supportive relationship with Shunkai, leveraging their history for his students' benefit. His leadership cultivates a rigorous environment focused on fundamentals while addressing individual needs.

Narratively, Shibakiyama bridges amateur and professional sumo. He identifies unconventional potential and creates advancement pathways, notably supporting Hinomaru's goal to bypass height requirements via championship success. His coaching philosophy, shaped by his apprenticeship under Shunkai, blends traditional techniques with adaptable teaching.
