Description
Kasuga Nozaki is a central figure in the D-Project, the head of its research group within the ISDA. His outward appearance is that of a dedicated scientist, a man credited with the rapid advancement of dragon research over a two-year period. He presents himself as a calm and collected researcher, and his physical appearance includes gray hair and a goatee.
However, his human identity is a carefully maintained facade. Nozaki is eventually revealed to be a dragon, identified as the third original dragon. His true name, in his dragon form, is Atrum, which is how the researcher Yuuri Kitajima recognizes him. He arrived on Earth from the asteroid Thanatos with a mission to retrieve Earth-born dragons. Two years before the main story, he collided with a space shuttle, an event that killed the family of the protagonist, Jin Kamishina, and filled Nozaki with immense guilt.
Nozaki's personality is defined by a complex mix of duty, secrecy, and paternal care. He is highly protective of the researcher Yuuri Kitajima, having apparently completed a Resonance with her at the time of the shuttle accident. For a period, she is unaware that he is a dragon, and he operates under the guise of her professor or assistant. His primary motivation is not aligned with either the human military or a simple return to his own kind. Instead, his top priority is to see the safe hatching of the remaining dragon eggs on Earth, which he considers his "children". This sense of responsibility leads him to side with humanity against other original dragons who oppose his views, causing a clash with the fourth original dragon.
Within the story's progression, Nozaki acts as a figure of hidden authority. His true nature is revealed gradually, and his loyalties remain ambiguous until he openly opposes other dragons to protect the eggs and the humans he has come to care for. His key relationship is with Yuuri Kitajima; their Resonance is a foundational secret that ties him to the human world. He also shares a unique bond with the dragon eggs and the dragons born on Earth, viewing their survival as his personal mission. In one instance, his power is subtly demonstrated when a captive Toa attempts to escape, but the glowing light in Nozaki's eyes makes her hesitate, revealing the powerful being beneath the scientist's exterior.
Nozaki undergoes significant development, moving from a secretive researcher to an active combatant making a monumental sacrifice. After a one-year time skip in the narrative, he is shown to possess the Stigmata, a mark of great power. In the climax of the series, he absorbs the Anti-Thanatos factor, effectively transforming himself into a living biological weapon. His final act is a sacrifice. He charges into a massive swarm of dragons that are blocking the way to Thanatos and self-destructs, using the power of the Anti-Thanatos factor to obliterate them and clear a path for the main characters to enter and complete their mission.
In terms of abilities, Nozaki’s most notable power is his true form as the original dragon Atrum, a being of immense strength capable of battling other original dragons. Beyond his physical prowess, he demonstrates a unique ability to project his draconic power through his human form, as shown when his glowing eyes command the attention of another powerful dragon. He is also capable of absorbing the Anti-Thanatos factor, a feat that turns his body into a weapon of mass destruction, culminating in his self-sacrificial explosion.
