OVA
Description
Araki Murashige, a resurrected Sengoku-period warlord, serves as the antagonist in the OVA "Rebels of the River Edge". Originally aligned with Oda Nobunaga, his historical rebellion led to his clan's annihilation, an event fueling his present motivations. Manifesting as a vengeful spirit, Murashige relentlessly pursues a 400-year-old Buddhist mandala crafted from his deceased clansmen's hair. This artifact symbolizes his connection to his fallen followers and his drive to reclaim their legacy or power, forming the central conflict as he opposes protagonists safeguarding spiritual balance.

His characterization blends historical ambition with supernatural elements. He resurfaces concurrently with the re-awakened militant Ikko sect, historically active in his lifetime, though identified as a deserter from the sect. His quest threatens the stability between the physical and spiritual realms. A significant personal conflict arises when Haruie Kakizaki, a protagonist member, recognizes Murashige as Shintarou—her lover from a past life. Ordered to eliminate him, Haruie's recognition introduces emotional complexity, highlighting themes of reincarnation and unresolved attachments; the narrative does not confirm if Murashige reciprocates this recognition or shares her memories.

Murashige embodies persistence and obsession, his relentless pursuit of the mandala reflecting an inability to move beyond his historical trauma and defeat. The OVA concludes without resolving his ultimate fate, leaving both the spiritual threat and the personal conflict with Haruie unresolved.
