Description
Lio Convoy, originally called Convoy, advanced within the Maximal Space Patrol through honesty, selfless dedication, and leading by example. His strength and bravery, despite occasional over-straightforwardness, earned Optimus Primal's respect and selection as successor. Investigating a suspicious SOS signal in an asteroid field, he fell into Predacon emperor Galvatron's trap, resulting in his spacecraft's destruction and crash-landing on planet Gaia. Severely weakened by the corrosive atmosphere, he was rescued by a white lion who carried him to an Angolmois Energy-saturated cave that healed his injuries. He scanned the lion to adopt its form as a protective beast mode, renaming himself Lio Convoy.
Stranded on Gaia with his crew aboard the wrecked starship Yukikaze, Lio Convoy led the Maximals against Galvatron's forces seeking the planet's Angolmois Energy. His leadership prioritized unity, tactical precision, and the safety of his team and potential allies over brute force. This approach extended to conflicts with groups like the Insectrons; he initially refrained from attacking despite provocations, eventually forging an alliance after exposing Predacon manipulations. His combat philosophy held that battle revealed an opponent's true character, leading to fierce rivalries and enduring friendships.
Lio Convoy's relationship with his "son," Lio Junior—a clone created from his Energon Matrix and Angolmois Energy—was challenging. Initially strained by Lio Convoy's gruff military demeanor and inability to express approval, their dynamic evolved through shared conflicts. When Lio Junior's reckless actions with an alien teleportation device endangered the Maximals, Lio Convoy later acknowledged his son's valor after Lio Junior nearly sacrificed himself to summon Optimus Primal. This culminated in their reconciliation and combined efforts against threats like the artificial planet Nemesis.
In the Beast Wars II film, facing the Decepticon titan Majin Zarak summoned by Galvatron via the teleportation device, Lio Convoy teamed with Optimus Primal. They fused their Energon Matrices to upgrade Lio Convoy into Flash Lio Convoy, defeating Zarak with a coordinated "Double Matrix Blast." Later, during the Nemesis crisis, Lio Convoy and Lio Junior merged using purified Angolmois Energy to become the "Great Green Warrior," defeating Galvatron and sealing the Angolmois Energy into capsules. Nemesis's subsequent explosion trapped Lio Convoy and his crew in a wormhole.
In *Beast Wars Neo*, Lio Convoy reappeared after escaping the wormhole, revealing Angolmois Energy as Unicron's life-force. He aided Big Convoy's Maximals against Unicron, using his remaining power to free them from the wormhole before rejoining the final battle to restore Cybertron. Expanded media depicted him as a high-ranking operative in the covert Maximal unit "the Pack," authorizing undercover missions against threats like Magmatron and coordinating rescue operations during Angolmois-related corruption outbreaks. In a separate continuity, he later ascended to "Great Convoy" status, traveling dimensions to monitor Unicron's resurgence and wielding an Energon Matrix-powered sword to neutralize dark energy threats.
A notable anomaly involved his evil clone, Black Lio Convoy, created when Predacons manipulated Tasmania Kid into duplicating Lio Convoy with an ancient device. The clone possessed all original memories and abilities but was driven by arrogance, attempting to replace Lio Convoy and the Maximals with copies. The original exposed the clone's ignorance of Maximal protocols, leading to its defeat and disintegration after the duplication device's destruction.
