Description
Mori Kasuto is the manager of the Akanegaoka High School boys’ football team in the anime Hungry Heart: Wild Striker. He is a teenage boy with short green hair and brown eyes, and during the early episodes he wears glasses, later switching to contact lenses. Despite this change, the protagonist Kyosuke Kanou continues to refer to him by the nickname Glasses Monkey.
Kasuto’s background includes playing football in middle school, but an injury forced him to stop. Even though he can no longer play competitively, he retains a deep, passionate love for the sport and channels that enthusiasm into his managerial role. His personality is persistent and observant; he is quick to recognize Kyosuke’s natural talent as a striker and, together with girls’ team captain Miki Tsujiwaki, pushes Kyosuke to rejoin the sport he had abandoned.
His primary motivation is to see Kyosuke fulfill his potential and to help the team succeed, driven by his own unfulfilled desire to play. Within the story, Kasuto acts as a key catalyst for Kyosuke’s return to football and later supports the team from the sidelines, offering strategic insight and encouragement. His relationship with Kyosuke is marked by the latter’s teasing nickname, but there is mutual respect beneath the banter. He also works closely with Miki, sharing a common goal of revitalizing the boys’ team.
Over the course of the series, Kasuto’s development is subtle: he becomes more confident in his managerial abilities and his switch from glasses to contacts may symbolize a shift in self-perception. His notable abilities lie not in physical play but in his understanding of the game, his knack for spotting talent, and his dedication to the club. Though no longer a player, his knowledge and passion make him an indispensable part of the Akanegaoka football community.
