Description
Cecilie von Spitzberg, often called by her nickname Celi which is pronounced as Cheri in Japanese, is the former Maoh, or Demon King, of the Great Demon Kingdom of Shin Makoku. She is the mother of three sons, each from a different father: Gwendal von Voltaire, Conrad Weller, and Wolfram von Bielefeld. As the previous ruler, she was the 26th Maoh before her successor, the series' protagonist Yuri Shibuya, took the throne.
Cecilie presents a deceptively simple exterior. Initially, she often comes across as an airheaded and flippant individual, more interested in romance than responsibility. However, this cheerful and carefree demeanor masks a very astute, intelligent, and deeply caring personality. She is highly perceptive and possesses a remarkable ability to take control of situations easily and effectively when necessary.
Her primary motivation, following her retirement as the reigning monarch, is her self-proclaimed free and easy quest for love. She delights in pursuing romantic interests and has shown an open and unapologetic fondness for handsome men, including Yuri Shibuya, his older brother Shori, and her own childhood friend Raven, whom she once wished to marry. Despite her own flirtatious nature, she is a chief supporter of the engagement between her youngest son, Wolfram, and Yuri, believing them to be a perfect couple.
In the story, Cecilie serves as a supporting figure whose influence is felt throughout Shin Makoku. After being replaced as Maoh, she enjoys her newfound freedom but remains a powerful and respected figure known as one of the three great witches of the kingdom, with the epithet Golden Cheri. Her relationships with her three sons are central to her character. Though she maintains a cheerful and sometimes teasing attitude towards them, she cares for Gwendal, Conrad, and Wolfram profoundly. When Wolfram temporarily dies, she is absolutely devastated, demonstrating the depth of her maternal love. Throughout the series, she consistently does her best to protect her sons, often operating behind the scenes or indirectly to shield them from harm.
Cecilie possesses several notable abilities befitting a former Demon King and great witch. She is quite powerful, skilled in magic, and particularly proficient with fire magic. In combat, she demonstrates admirable skill with a whip. Her fighting style is famous for an uncanny ability to quickly change into a striking outfit of red leather and a mask, a fearsome transformation that tends to intimidate her enemies so thoroughly that many are unwilling to face her a second time. Outside of battle, she has a gentle hobby of cultivating new types of flowers in the gardens of Blood Pledge Castle, giving them whimsical and sentimental names such as Beautiful Wolfram, Secret Gwendal, and Filled with Yuri's Naivete.
