Description
Illyasviel von Einzbern, often called Illya, is the chosen representative of the Einzbern family for the Fifth Holy Grail War. She is a homunculus, an artificial human created using sorcery, but she is also unique as the biological daughter of Kiritsugu Emiya and Irisviel von Einzbern, making her a hybrid of human and homunculus. As a result of extensive magical alterations performed while she was in the womb, her physical growth was severely stunted, causing her to have the appearance of a child around nine years old. In reality, she is actually slightly older than her adoptive brother, Shirou Emiya. Her body was purpose-built by her family to serve as the vessel for the Holy Grail, a role that defines her existence as the "small Holy Grail" tasked with absorbing the souls of defeated Servants.

Illya possesses a duality that makes her one of the most unpredictable figures in the war. On the surface, she often appears cheerful, innocent, and playful, greeting Shirou as "big brother" and displaying a genuine, childlike curiosity and affection. However, her upbringing in the isolated Einzbern castle did not include teaching her human morals, and as a result, her innocence is intertwined with a profound cruelty. She can smile while threatening to kill and has no inherent aversion to taking lives, acting as a natural force that is both angelic and demonic. This conflicting nature stems from her role as a living tool for the Einzbern family and the deep emotional scars left by her father.

Her central motivation is a complex mixture of family duty, revenge, and a desperate yearning for connection. She was raised with the singular mission of winning the Holy Grail War to restore the Einzbern family's honor, a task made more personal by her father's actions. Kiritsugu Emiya, whom she loved deeply, was hired by the Einzberns to win the Fourth Holy Grail War but ultimately betrayed them by destroying the corrupted Grail. He then abandoned Illya in Germany and later adopted Shirou in Japan before his death. Feeling abandoned and replaced, Illya harbors a powerful resentment toward her father, which she transfers to Shirou. She both wants to kill him as the heir to Kiritsugu's betrayal and desires his affection as a brother, creating a tense, love-hate relationship that is central to her role in the story.

Her key relationships further illuminate her character. The most crucial is with her Servant, Berserker (Heracles). While initially frustrated by his silence, she comes to see him as a gentle protector who willingly endures great pain to shield her, and she develops a deep, familial affection for him. She is served by two homunculus maids, Sella and Leysritt, who act as her caretakers and protectors. Her relationship with Shirou evolves throughout the story; in some cases, she remains a formidable antagonist, while in others, she grows into an ally and a clingy surrogate little sister, moving into his home and forming a bond with his circle of friends. Notably, in the Heaven's Feel route, she embraces her identity as Shirou's older sister, and her motivations shift from vengeance to self-sacrifice to save him.

As a magus, Illya is exceptionally powerful, described as a high-ranking master with circuits that far surpass ordinary magi. Her entire body is etched with Command Seals, and she can command a Servant of Berserker's immense calibre with precision, though it causes her pain. Her personal magic involves the "flow and transfer of force," and she can manifest a complex form of alchemy known as "Angel's Poem," which uses her silver hair to create powerful, autonomous bird-like familiars. Because the Greater Grail is located in Fuyuki City, her power as the small Grail is greatly amplified, allowing her to perform feats that defy magical theory, such as large-scale terrain alteration.

Throughout the narrative of Fate/stay night, Illyasviel is a tragic figure whose development leads to an inevitable conclusion. As the "small Holy Grail," absorbing the spirits of fallen Servants slowly shuts down her human functions. It is suggested by characters like Zouken Matou that she does not have long to live after the war ends, regardless of the outcome. Her story is one of reclaiming her humanity from the cold purpose for which she was created. Her final act in the Heaven's Feel route, where she uses the long-sought-after Third Sorcery—the materialization of the soul—to save Shirou at the cost of her own life, represents the ultimate defiance of her fate as a tool, choosing love and familial bond over her programmed purpose as a vessel for the Grail.
