Description
Illyasviel von Einzbern, who prefers to be called Illya, is a young German aristocrat and a Master in the Fifth Holy Grail War. Despite her appearance as a small, fragile girl with long silver hair and crimson eyes, she is chronologically eighteen years old at the time of the war, older than the protagonist Shirou Emiya. This youthful look is a result of her true nature as a homunculus, an artificial human created by the Einzbern family through the application of sorcery. Her body was heavily modified before and after birth to maximize her magical circuits, making her an ideal living vessel for the Holy Grail, but this process also stunted her physical growth and drastically shortened her lifespan.

Illya presents a dual personality that can shift dramatically. On the surface, she is often cheerful, playful, and outgoing, acting like a whimsical and mischievous child. She can be affectionate and clingy, particularly towards Shirou, who she calls "Oniichan". However, this angelic demeanor hides a much crueler and more callous side. Having been raised in the isolated Einzbern castle and trained harshly for the war, she can be extremely ruthless, viewing other Masters as enemies to be eliminated without remorse and speaking of death with an unsettling, smiling calmness.

Her motivations are deeply rooted in her family history. She is the biological daughter of Kiritsugu Emiya, the magus killer who won the previous Holy Grail War, and the homunculus Irisviel von Einzbern. Kiritsugu, who was hired by the Einzbern family, ultimately betrayed them by destroying the corrupted Grail. After the war, he abandoned Illya, leaving her in the care of the Einzberns while he adopted Shirou in Japan. Feeling abandoned and jealous that Shirou received the love her father denied her, Illya travels to Fuyuki City specifically to confront Shirou and take revenge for what she perceives as a betrayal.

In the Fifth Holy Grail War, Illya serves as the Master of the Servant Berserker, the legendary hero Heracles. She lives in a large castle on the outskirts of Fuyuki, attended only by her maids, Leysritt and Sella. Her role in the story varies depending on the narrative path. In the Fate route, she begins as a primary antagonist, capturing Shirou and forcing a confrontation. After Berserker's defeat, she loses her hostility and comes to live peacefully at Shirou's house, bonding with him as a surrogate family member. In the Unlimited Blade Works route, she is killed by the Servant Gilgamesh, who rips out her heart to use her as a component for the Grail. In the Heaven's Feel route, her role is most significant; she becomes a key ally to Shirou, revealing the true nature of the Grail and ultimately sacrificing her own existence to become the vessel for the Holy Grail and save him, fulfilling her purpose as his older sister.

As a magus, Illya is exceptionally powerful. Being a homunculus designed as a walking magical circuit, her reserves of magical energy are colossal, far surpassing that of a normal human. She also possesses Mystic Eyes of Binding, which allow her to paralyze anyone who makes direct eye contact with her. Her primary combat strategy, however, relies almost entirely on the overwhelming strength of her Servant, Berserker. Her most crucial ability is not a weapon but her very existence: she is the Lesser Grail. Her body is designed to absorb the souls of defeated Servants, acting as the key to summoning the Greater Grail once enough have been collected.
