Description
Asura is the first being to ever become a Kishin, a malevolent entity born from a meister who descends into madness by consuming human souls. His existence represents the ultimate threat to order in the world, acting as the physical embodiment of fear and madness.

Asura was originally created by Death himself, the god of order, as a fragment containing his own fear. In order to become the God of Absolute Order, Death separated this fear from himself, and it took the form of Asura, making him Death's eldest son and the older "brother" of Death the Kid. For a time, Asura served as a warlord and the strongest member of the Eight Shinigami Legions, also known as the Eight Powerful Warriors or Great Old Ones.

Despite possessing immense power, Asura's defining characteristic is his overwhelming and all-consuming fear. He was perpetually terrified, primarily of death itself, a profound irony given his status as an immortal death god. This deep-seated paranoia made him profoundly mistrustful of everyone around him. In an attempt to comfort and protect himself, he would wear five or six layers of clothing along with long white scarves that covered most of his face. Asura's behavior is erratic and unpredictable, swinging between a calm and almost serene demeanor to a maniacal and senseless frenzy. This instability is directly linked to his madness, and interestingly, his behavior becomes more calm and sarcastic when his face is uncovered.

His primary motivation is the alleviation of his own terror. Driven by this fear, he became obsessed with acquiring ultimate power, believing it was the only way to feel safe. This obsession led him to abandon all discipline and morality. He began secretly consuming the souls of innocent humans who were not on Shinigami's list of sanctioned targets. His paranoia eventually extended to his own weapon partner, Vajra, whom he also consumed. This final act, combined with the countless souls he had devoured, caused him to be consumed by madness and transform into the first Kishin. He further descended by consuming three of his fellow Great Old Ones.

In this role, Asura is the primary antagonist of the story. Eight hundred years before the main events, his father, Death, was forced to stop him. Death tore off Asura's skin to create a powerful seal, trapping him in a bag and burying him deep beneath the location that would become Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA). Death then rooted his own soul to the area to ensure the seal held. Asura is resurrected by the witch Medusa and her faction, who inject him with black blood, triggering a chain of events that plunges the world into his madness wavelength.

Asura's most significant relationship is with his father, Shinigami-sama. Although Death was his master and they once fought together, Asura was always afraid of him. After his resurrection, he speaks to Death with surprising politeness and formality, suggesting a lingering, twisted form of respect. He is also the fragment of Death's fear, making him a direct counterpart to Death's order. He also has a complex relationship with his "brother," Death the Kid, who ultimately seeks to stop him. The witch Arachne becomes an ally to Asura in the anime adaptation, even developing feelings for him, though this ultimately leads to her demise.

Asura undergoes little character development in the traditional sense, as he is an agent of chaos. His development is more a deepening of his madness. Upon his resurrection, he is initially disoriented and even shows a strange sense of humor, commenting on his own nudity and complimenting the werewolf Free on his muscular appearance. However, he quickly resumes his role as a god of fear. In the final battle, he is confronted not by a more powerful attack, but by the concept of courage. Maka Albarn's absolute lack of fear in the face of his terror confuses and weakens him, proving that his power as the embodiment of fear is nullified by true bravery.

As the first Kishin and a Great Old One, Asura possesses god-like abilities. His most dangerous power is his madness wavelength, which passively drives people insane simply by being near him. This specific madness is the Madness of Fear, which induces terrifying hallucinations and can eventually erode the world's order itself. He can use this wavelength offensively as a crushing pressure to pin down his opponents. Despite his cowardice, his physical capabilities are immense, allowing him to challenge Death himself. After consuming his weapon Vajra, Asura can regurgitate the weapon and fire devastating energy beams powerful enough to wound a god. His body is also highly unusual; he can stretch and control his own skin, using it as bandages or scarves that act as extra limbs for offense and defense. He also has the power to generate creatures called Clowns from his madness, which serve as his army to spread further chaos.
