Description
Free is a legendary werewolf and a member of the immortal clan, introduced as a powerful and long-imprisoned figure in the world. His background is defined by a single, monumental act of theft: he stole the left eye of Maba, the grand witch queen, an artifact known as the Demon Eye. This crime led to his capture and a subsequent two-hundred-year imprisonment in a witch prison, where he was stripped of his original name and referred to only as the Man with the Demon Eye. He was ultimately freed from his cell by Eruka Frog, acting on the orders of the witch Medusa Gorgon. In celebration of his regained liberty, he chose a new name for himself: Free.

Despite his fearsome reputation and immense power, Free possesses a personality that is often surprisingly silly, comedic, and foolish, traits he himself acknowledges. During his imprisonment, he devised an elaborate escape plan to dig a tunnel with a spoon, inspired by a movie he thought was cool. This plan failed because the prison only served food that required chopsticks, and he was never given a spoon. When Eruka suggested a simpler method, like urinating on the bars to corrode them over time, Free responded by repeatedly bashing his head against a tree and calling himself an idiot. He has a notably poor sense of direction, which leads to comedic errors in his missions. For instance, during one operation, he was assigned to destroy a lock in one tower of a castle but instead ended up in a tower on the complete opposite side. He also becomes flustered when his mistakes are noticed, such as when his fighting skills, rusty from two centuries of inactivity, cause him to accidentally injure himself during battle, prompting him to unconvincingly claim that nothing is wrong.

Free’s primary motivations are rooted in a deep-seated resentment of the world order enforced by Death, the god of the Death Weapon Meister Academy (DWMA). He believes that humans and their rules have unfairly controlled the fate of wolves, killing them when they pose a threat and only offering protection when their numbers dwindle. He refuses to accept what he sees as a crappy future for his kind and views his own actions as the judgment of nature. This ideological opposition to Death makes him a willing antagonist. However, on a personal level, his most immediate and consistent motivation is a strong sense of debt and loyalty. Upon being freed, he immediately asked Medusa how he could repay her and persisted in offering his services even when she initially dismissed the notion. This sense of honor drives his role as a key operative for Medusa throughout much of the story.

His role in the story is that of a recurring antagonist and a powerful enforcer for Medusa Gorgon. Free is deployed on several critical missions. His first major task is to confront the DWMA students Maka Albarn and Soul Eater in London to test the effects of the Black Blood within Soul. Later, he plays an integral role in Medusa’s primary scheme to revive the ancient god of fear, Asura the Kishin. He uses his powerful spatial magic to cast the Independent Cube, a barrier that traps the entire DWMA within a separate space, allowing Medusa and her team to reach Asura’s sealed chamber. During the Kishin’s revival, Free holds off pursuing forces like Death the Kid and Black Star, buying Eruka the precious seconds she needs to complete the ritual. Following Medusa’s death, his role shifts. He later infiltrates the rival organization Arachnophobia as a spy, where an error in his directional sense leads to an unlikely team-up with Death the Kid to defeat a powerful enemy. He is eventually captured by the DWMA and used as a bargaining chip in negotiations with the witches.

Key relationships define his journey. His most significant relationship is with Medusa Gorgon, whom he serves out of a deep, self-imposed obligation for his freedom. He allies with Eruka Frog, who physically freed him, and the two work together closely on several operations. Because of his status as an enemy of DWMA, he comes into conflict with many of its main characters, including Maka and Soul, Black Star, and Death the Kid. Ironically, his poor sense of direction later forces him into a temporary and reluctant partnership with Kid during the infiltration of Arachnophobia, where they must combine their powers to fight a common foe.

Free demonstrates a certain development over the course of the narrative. While his core personality remains clumsy and good-natured in a gruff way, his combat effectiveness increases as he shakes off the rust from his long imprisonment. More notably, he transitions from a primary antagonist serving a specific villain to a more neutral wild card. After the defeat of his master Medusa and subsequent events, he ultimately aligns himself with neither the DWMA nor the witches, instead finding a relatively peaceful existence apart from the central conflict. Throughout this journey, his defining traits of immaturity and his appalling sense of direction consistently provide comedic relief and lead him into unforeseen situations.

Notable abilities make Free an exceptionally dangerous foe. Foremost is his immortality and rapid regeneration, a trait of his clan. He can survive and instantly heal from grievous wounds that would be fatal to anyone else, including being stabbed through the head or torso, allowing him to fight with an incredibly aggressive and reckless style. He is a skilled martial artist, utilizing a fighting style known as the Fighting Wolf Fist. His most distinct powers come from the stolen Demon Eye in his left socket, which grants him access to powerful magic. He is proficient in ice magic, able to create projectiles, pillars, and other structures in combat. He also wields spatial magic, with his most advanced technique being the Independent Cube, a spell that can isolate a targeted area from the rest of the world. He can also use a spell called Forwarding Vision to project a lifelike, combat-capable illusion of himself over a great distance. Finally, the Demon Eye itself can unleash a powerful, high-energy beam attack known as the Demon Eye Cannon.
