Description
Azusa Yumi is a Death Scythe, one of the most elite Demon Weapons serving the Shinigami at Death Weapon Meister Academy. She is primarily in charge of the DWMA’s East Asia division and, following the revival of the Kishin Asura, also takes over responsibilities for the Oceania division from her colleague Marie Mjolnir. Her name is a play on the Azusayumi, a sacred bow used in ancient Japanese Shinto rituals to ward off evil spirits, which reflects her weapon form and cultural aesthetic.

Physically, Azusa is a woman of apparent Asian descent with a neat, intellectual appearance. She has small, dark blue eyes and neatly combed black hair styled uniquely short at the back while sloping into longer strands toward the front. She is typically seen wearing a pair of simple framed glasses and formal attire consisting of a black jumper over a long-collared white shirt with Asian-style patterns, paired with black wide-sleeve pants and brick-red high-heeled boots.

In terms of personality, Azusa is bookish, analytical, and unfailingly respectful in her general mannerisms, but she also possesses a distinctly bossy and authoritative streak. During her own student days, she served as the student council president, a role in which she frequently scolded her classmates Spirit for his endless flirting and Franken Stein for his compulsive urge to dissect everything. This behavior earned her the nickname Queen of Committee Chairman from her peers, with Spirit describing her as a bossy little brat. Even as an adult, she tends to treat her former classmates like children, clapping to get their attention and instructing them to line up or walk in single file, much to their embarrassment. Despite her strict exterior, she shows a warmer, more pragmatic side when dealing with friends, such as when she cleverly talked Marie out of the nonsensical idea of marrying a toilet. Her straightforward and sometimes blunt nature is further evidenced by her willingness to speak her thoughts candidly, even when the topic is sensitive.

Azusa’s primary role within the DWMA is that of a long-range intelligence asset and tactical supporter. She is an extremely competent information gatherer and strategist, capable of locating hidden facilities such as Arachnophobia's secret labs. Her motivations are rooted in a sense of duty and order; she is dedicated to maintaining the safety and structure of the DWMA’s global operations and to supporting the fight against the Kishin and other supernatural threats. She is seen supervising critical missions, including Spartoi’s first assignment to investigate one of Medusa’s abandoned laboratories in Central Africa, where she provides essential remote support.

Azusa holds several key relationships within the DWMA. She and Marie Mjolnir are good friends, often displaying a serious-clueless dynamic where Azusa has to keep the more romantically distracted Marie in check. With Dr. Franken Stein and Spirit Albarn, her relationship is colored by their shared history; while she respects them as colleagues and allies, she does not hesitate to blame them for past failures and continues to scold them as if they were still unruly students. She also works effectively alongside the meister Sid Barrett, providing tactical and long-range support on assignments. Among younger gun-type weapons like Liz Thompson, Azusa is regarded as an idol due to her skill and status as a Death Scythe.

Throughout the story, Azusa demonstrates notable development in her investigative role, particularly in uncovering the truth behind the traitor within the DWMA. She uses her position to conduct her own inquiries, ultimately determining that fellow Death Scythe Justin Law lacked an alibi for the time of Joe Buttataki's death, proving her to be a diligent and suspicious investigator. Her abilities are extensive and highly specialized. In her weapon form, she transforms into a unique crossbow-like sniper rifle that combines elements of a musket and a ballista. In this form, she can compress a soul’s wavelength to fire high-pressure spirit shots with extreme accuracy, reportedly able to hit a target ten kilometers away with only a one-millimeter margin of error. Her signature technique is the Senrigan, or Thousand-Mile Eyes, a clairvoyant ability that allows her to see everything within a fifty-meter radius of a person she is synchronized with. This technique is combined with her unique skill of Telesynchronization, which enables her to establish a long-distance Soul Resonance through a communication device like a radio or telephone, allowing her to provide real-time tactical information from a remote headquarters. She can also use this linked vision to allow others, such as the witch Kim Diehl, to read and translate Witch Text through her eyes. Her control over her soul wavelength is so refined that it grants her powers which appear almost like magic.
