Description
Gino Weinberg is a character from the second season of the anime Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. He holds the prestigious rank of the Knight of Three within the Holy Britannian Empire's elite Knight of Rounds, a group of twelve warriors who serve directly as the Emperor's royal guard. Despite being a scion of the noble Weinberg family, Gino is the fourth son and was initially not considered a priority heir, which led him to pursue a military career and ascend to his high rank through his own exceptional piloting skills rather than relying on his family name.

In stark contrast to the brooding and serious personalities often found among his colleagues, Gino is characterized by an energetic, optimistic, and outgoing nature. He is friendly, casual, and often impulsive, lacking the rigid formality expected of someone of his noble standing. This manifests in a tendency to be overly familiar with others, frequently giving friendly one-armed hugs to his friend Suzaku Kururugi and engaging in lighthearted banter with enemies such as Kallen Kozuki. His sheltered upbringing as a noble occasionally leads to somewhat naive or dimwitted actions, as he does not always fully grasp how the real world operates for common people. Nonetheless, he is fundamentally guided by a desire to do the right thing, which allows him to form friendships across the opposing sides of the conflict.

Gino first appears in Area 11, arriving alongside Suzaku and fellow Knight of Rounds member Anya Alstreim. He immediately demonstrates his impulsive nature by single-handedly attacking the government district to test its defenses, an act that is halted by Suzaku. His relationship with Suzaku is a central part of his story. Initially, he is requested to test Suzaku in a Knightmare duel upon the latter's appointment to the Knights of the Round. Although Gino is confident and dismissive of his opponent, he loses the match decisively. Instead of harboring resentment, he is impressed by Suzaku's ability and quickly becomes his most persistent and enthusiastic friend. He and Anya later enroll at the Ashford Academy, joining the student council in an effort to experience a normal life, where he becomes a classmate to Lelouch Lamperouge without knowing his true identity.

Gino's motivations evolve throughout the series. Initially, he serves the Empire faithfully, viewing the conflict against the Black Knights as a straightforward military duty. He participates in several key operations, including fighting to rescue the Viceroy Nunnally and providing security during the Special Administration Zone of Japan. He develops a particular interest in the ace pilot Kallen Kozuki, both respecting her combat skills and showing a personal, flirtatious curiosity about her. However, as the political landscape shifts, Gino finds himself at odds with his superiors. He is placed under house arrest for refusing to participate in a coup d'état planned by the second prince, Schneizel el Britannia, whom he had previously served. The final turning point comes when Lelouch vi Britannia seizes the throne and declares himself emperor. Gino cannot accept Lelouch's tyrannical rule and joins an uprising against him, during which his Knightmare is severely damaged in a confrontation with Suzaku. After learning that his own family has perished in a massive attack and witnessing Lelouch's oppressive regime, he defects to the Black Knights to take part in the final battle.

A highly skilled Knightmare pilot, Gino operates a distinctive, custom-built machine called the Tristan. The Tristan is notable for its ability to transform between a humanoid Knightmare Mode and a high-speed fighter jet-like Fortress Mode, a capability that Gino utilizes to its fullest potential to perform aggressive, high-mobility maneuvers. After his original machine is destroyed, he receives an upgraded version, the Tristan Divider, created by the Black Knights' engineer Rakshata. With this unit, he is able to fight on par with the war's most advanced machines, even managing to destroy Emperor Lelouch's personal unit, the Shinkiro, during the final assault on the floating fortress Damocles.

By the series' conclusion, his closest friendships have been shattered by war. His relationship with Suzaku is irreparably broken, ending with them as bitter enemies on the battlefield. Following the assassination of Emperor Lelouch as part of the Zero Requiem plan, Gino is freed from captivity. With the collapse of the Empire's nobility, he loses his aristocratic title but survives as the last surviving member of his house. In the aftermath, he is shown to have moved on from the conflict, dedicating his life to world travel and adventure.
