Description
Lloyd Asplund is a supporting character in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2. He is a Britannian scientist, engineer, and aristocrat who holds the title of Earl. He serves as the head of the Advanced Special Envoy Engineering Corps, later absorbed into the Camelot division, and is responsible for the design and development of the world's first seventh‑generation Knightmare Frame, the Lancelot. He is physically tall and thin with lavender hair.

His background includes attendance at the Imperial Colchester Institute before joining the military. His research organization, Camelot, is an irregular division of the Britannian military granted permission by Prince Schneizel to operate outside standard command structures. Lloyd personally selects Suzaku Kururugi as the Lancelot's pilot, recognizing his potential, though he often treats Suzaku more as a component of the machine than as a person.

Personalitywise, Lloyd is an eccentric genius with a relaxed, playful, and almost childish demeanor. He is completely absorbed in technological development and largely ignorant of worldly matters. He describes himself as a sociopath and claims to have no interest in love, dedicating himself entirely to science. He tends to view humans as interchangeable parts of a machine, a perspective that leads him to make blunt, sometimes rude remarks without malicious intent. Despite this detached front, he occasionally reveals sharp insights into human nature, and his actions sometimes suggest a deeper care for those closest to him, such as his assistant Cécile Croomy. He dislikes divulging personal information and becomes uncomfortable when emotional states are discussed.

His motivations are driven primarily by his fascination with engineering and innovation. He is not particularly loyal to Britannian ideology; rather, he is drawn to interesting technological challenges. This is exemplified by his engagement to Milly Ashford, which is motivated by his interest in the Ganymede Knightmare Frame left at Ashford Academy rather than by romantic feelings.

In the story, Lloyd functions as a key technical support for the Britannian military and later for Lelouch's regime. In R2, after the Black Rebellion, his division is absorbed into Camelot, and he becomes Suzaku's dedicated technical engineer. He willingly joins Lelouch's new government after Lelouch becomes Emperor, remarking that he and Cécile have become cogs in a machine without realizing it, and he does not mind losing his title of Earl. He works with Nina Einstein and Cécile to develop a countermeasure to the FLEIJA weapon and to construct the Lancelot Frontier for C.C. He also expresses scientific curiosity about Lelouch's Geass power but is warned off by Jeremiah Gottwald. Under Lelouch's orders, he assists in the rescue of hostages aboard the Avalon. Ultimately, he becomes a collaborator in Lelouch and Suzaku's Zero Requiem plan.

His key relationships include Cécile Croomy, his close assistant and fellow engineer, with whom he shares a complex bond that hints at a softer side beneath his cold exterior. He has a working relationship with Prince Schneizel, who grants him operational independence. He interacts with Suzaku primarily as the pilot of his machines, seeing him as a valuable component. His interactions with Lelouch are professional; Lloyd respects Lelouch's strategic mind and is willing to work under him.

Development throughout the series is subtle. While his fundamental view of humanity as interchangeable remains largely unchanged, he shows moments of genuine concern, such as stopping Suzaku from unnecessary danger—though he frames it as a practical consideration about human fragility rather than empathy. By the end of R2, his presence in Viletta's wedding picture alongside Cécile suggests a degree of social integration and human connection he previously avoided.

His notable abilities are purely technical and intellectual. He is a brilliant engineer with exceptional analytical skills, capable of designing and building cutting‑edge Knightmare Frames and advanced weapon systems. He has no combat abilities of his own and relies on his machines and their pilots to achieve practical results. His mind is his primary asset, allowing him to construct complex machinery and devise technological solutions to strategic problems.
