Description
Charles di Britannia is the 98th emperor of the Holy Britannian Empire. He holds the position of primary antagonist and is the father of Lelouch vi Britannia, the series protagonist. A man of immense stature and presence, Charles has long, flowing white hair and a muscular build, befitting his role as the absolute monarch of the world's dominant superpower. He maintains a personal philosophy rooted in social Darwinism, publicly championing the principles of competition, inequality, and the survival of the fittest. He views traditional morals such as charity and peace as lies created by the weak to protect themselves, and he believes it is Britannia's duty to crush falsehoods and conquer those who are not strong enough to rule themselves.

Despite his tyrannical public persona, Charles’s true motivations are far more complex and private. His ultimate goal is not simply world conquest but the initiation of the Ragnarök Connection. This is a plan to use ancient artifacts and Geass-related ruins, primarily the Sword of Akasha, to access and destroy the collective unconsciousness of humanity, a force he refers to as "God." By merging all human consciousness into a single, timeless entity, he aims to create a world without deception or lies, where no one can betray another and even the dead can be reunited with the living. His brutal global conquests serve a dual purpose: they appear to satisfy his stated ideology of force, but their true intent is to secure strategic locations containing the Geass ruins necessary for his plan.

Within the story, Charles di Britannia is a distant but domineering force. After the assassination of his consort, Marianne vi Britannia (whom he genuinely loved), he sent the young Lelouch and his crippled sister Nunnally to Japan as political hostages, an act he framed as punishment for Lelouch's impertinence but was later revealed to be a means of protecting them from courtly dangers. At the start of the second season, he personally intervenes to thwart Lelouch’s rebellion, capturing him and using his Geass to rewrite Lelouch’s memories, sealing his identity as Zero.

His key relationships are deeply intertwined with his grand design. His elder twin brother, V.V., is his original co-conspirator and the one who granted him his Geass. However, after learning that V.V. was responsible for Marianne's death out of jealousy, Charles coldly kills him and seizes his Code, sacrificing his Geass for immortality. He shares a mutual understanding with the immortal witch C.C., who was once an ally in his goal to destroy the Gods. His relationship with his son Lelouch is the central conflict of the final arc; Charles sees Lelouch's rebellion as a childish error, while Lelouch rejects his father’s plan to halt time and erase individuality, arguing instead for a future built on reality and its consequences.

Charles's development reveals a man shaped by trauma. The murder and deceit he witnessed during the imperial family’s succession wars left him deeply cynical and hateful of the "lying" nature of the world. This hatred eventually calcified into his messianic plan to forcibly unite all of humanity. Throughout the series, his abilities are formidable. He is a master orator and strategist, but his most notable power is his Geass, which manifests in both eyes. This Geass allows him to rewrite memories, implant false ones, or seal another person's Geass ability by looking into their eyes. After obtaining V.V.’s Code, he becomes immortal, though his plan is ultimately undone when Lelouch uses his own fully realized Geass to command the collective unconsciousness to reject Charles's interference, leading to Charles and the spirit of Marianne being erased from existence.
