TV-Series
Description
Cornelia li Britannia is the second princess of the Holy Britannian Empire and the older half-sister of Lelouch vi Britannia. As a member of the imperial family, she holds the position of a Viceroy and acts as the Chief General of the Imperial Army. In the narrative, she first appears after the death of her half-brother, Prince Clovis, arriving in Area 11 (formerly Japan) to take control of the situation and capture the masked rebel known as Zero.
In terms of personality, Cornelia is defined by her pride, her ruthlessness, and her uncompromising dedication to the Britannian ideal of aristocratic nobility. She operates from a belief that those who rule must be willing to fight and die on the front lines, and she frequently leads her forces into battle personally. Her public demeanor is cold and dismissive, especially toward those she considers enemies or inferiors. She is known to harbor a deep distrust for "Numbers," the conquered peoples of Britannian territories, and for Honorary Britannians, whom she initially regards with open contempt. This perspective is rooted in her patriotic fervor, as she takes great pride in her epithet as Britannia's "Goddess of Victory". Beneath this hardened exterior, however, she is deeply protective of those she considers her own, particularly her soldiers and her family.
Cornelia’s primary motivation shifts drastically over the course of the story. Initially, she is driven by a sense of duty and a desire for retribution. She seeks to avenge the deaths of her siblings whom she believes were victims of rebellion, specifically mourning the loss of Lelouch and Nunnally as political hostages, and later seeks justice for the murder of Clovis. However, her single most defining motivation is her love for her younger, full sister, Euphemia li Britannia. Euphemia is Cornelia’s only known emotional weakness, and her actions are heavily influenced by a need to protect her sister. After Euphemia is tragically killed in the massacre at the Special Administrative Zone, Cornelia’s motivation undergoes a fundamental transformation. Grief-stricken and determined to clear her sister’s tarnished name, she abandons her post as Viceroy and goes rogue, forsaking her status in the royal family to investigate the mysterious power of Geass, which she correctly identifies as the true cause of the tragedy.
Cornelia plays a significant role as a primary antagonist in the first season of the narrative, serving as a formidable military opponent to Zero and the Black Knights. Her tactical acumen is such that she is one of the few commanders capable of pushing Lelouch to his limits on the battlefield. After her disappearance following the Black Rebellion, she returns in the second season as a rogue agent. In this phase, she becomes a neutral party with her own agenda, eventually allying temporarily with her enemies to destroy the Geass Order, which she holds responsible for her sister's fate. Later, she aligns herself with her brother, Schneizel el Britannia, only to ultimately oppose him when she discovers the true extent of his willingness to sacrifice innocent lives for his vision of world peace.
Cornelia shares several key relationships that define her character. Her most important bond is with her sister, Euphemia, whom she coddles and protects fiercely, often to the point of it impairing her judgment in critical situations. She also holds deep respect for the late Empress Marianne, the mother of Lelouch and Nunnally, whom she idolized as a warrior and role model. This admiration led her to conduct her own investigation into Marianne's assassination, a fact unknown to most of the family. Her relationship with Lelouch is complex; unaware of his survival for many years, she was driven to capture Zero to avenge his perceived death. Upon discovering that Zero is her living brother and that he killed Euphemia, her feelings become a mixture of understanding for his motives and an inability to forgive his actions. She is also served by a circle of fiercely loyal officers, most notably her knight, Gilbert G.P. Guilford, and General Andreas Darlton, who are among the most skilled warriors in the empire.
The character undergoes notable development from a staunch imperialist to a disillusioned but principled leader. At the beginning, she embodies the Britannian philosophy of social Darwinism, valuing the lives of conquered peoples very little. However, the death of Euphemia catalyzes a profound change. By the second season, she has abandoned her prior prejudices, demonstrating a willingness to work with former enemies like the Black Knights and expressing horror at the idea of sacrificing the empire's own capital to achieve victory. She learns to question the very nation she once served without question, prioritizing human life and justice over imperial doctrine.
Regarding her abilities, Cornelia is a highly exceptional combatant and commander. She is renowned for her skill in piloting Knightmare Frames, piloting a customized Gloucester model and single-handedly destroying enemy strongholds, earning her the nickname "Britannia's Witch". Her tactical brilliance is showcased multiple times, as she is able to anticipate and counter many of Lelouch's strategic maneuvers in conventional warfare. She leads from the front, inspiring immense loyalty and high morale among her personal guard, the Glaston Knights. Her personal combat prowess is matched by a strong will and authority that commands respect even from those who outrank her, solidifying her status as one of the most powerful and dangerous figures within the empire.
