Description
Anya Alstreim is a character introduced in the second season of the anime. She holds the rank of Knight of Six within the Knights of the Round, the elite military order serving the Britannian Emperor, and is distinguished as the youngest member of that order at the age of fifteen. She has light pink hair and red eyes, and her demeanor is consistently quiet, reserved, and seemingly detached from the events unfolding around her, which often gives her a melancholic and introverted presence.
Anya's personality is marked by her taciturn nature and a notable lack of visible emotion. She has a habit of taking photographs with her mobile phone and updating a personal blog, a practice she engages in not to preserve memories or sentimental moments, but to create a record of events because she has little trust in her own memory. This fundamental distrust of her own recollection is a core aspect of her character. She often speaks in short, sometimes blunt sentences, and her unusual behavior can manifest in a lack of common sense, such as piloting her massive Knightmare Frame in a non-combat zone for a trivial purpose.
The central mystery of Anya's character lies in her obscured past. As a child, she was a palace maid-in-training at the Aries Villa, where she witnessed the assassination of Empress Marianne, the mother of Lelouch vi Britannia. In the aftermath of this event, her memories were tampered with using the supernatural power of Geass. The Emperor, Charles zi Britannia, altered her memory to conceal the truth of the assassination. More significantly, the dying Empress Marianne used her own Geass to transfer her consciousness into the young Anya, where it lay dormant for years. This hidden presence within her is the cause of her memory discrepancies, as well as the psychic reactions she experiences when in close proximity to Lelouch or the immortal witch C.C., which trigger fragments of Marianne's memories.
Anya's role in the story evolves from being a seemingly aloof adversary to a key figure in the deeper conspiracy surrounding the Emperor's plans. Initially, she is dispatched to Area 11 (Japan) alongside her fellow Knights of the Round, Suzaku Kururugi and Gino Weinberg, to maintain order. She forms a cordial working relationship with both, especially Suzaku, and later enrolls at the Ashford Academy, becoming a student alongside Lelouch and the other main characters. Her primary function in combat is as a formidable pilot, operating the heavily armored Knightmare Frame known as the Mordred, which is equipped with immense firepower including a Stark Hadron Cannon, reflecting a straightforward and overwhelming combat style.
As the Geass-related events escalate, the memories sealed within her begin to surface. The consciousness of Marianne briefly takes control of her body, using Anya as a vessel to interact with C.C. and move toward the Sword of Akasha, the central mechanism of the Emperor's plan to reshape the world. After Marianne's spirit departs her to enter the Sword of Akasha, Anya regains her own autonomy but is left confused. She later aligns herself with Prince Schneizel el Britannia in opposition to Lelouch, whom she states she has come to dislike. Her personal journey concludes when she is defeated in battle by Jeremiah Gottwald. Recognizing that her mind was tampered with, Jeremiah uses his Geass Canceller to nullify the Geass that had been altering her memories, restoring her true past to her.
Following the final conflict known as the Zero Requiem, Anya is seen living a peaceful life. She works on Jeremiah's orange farm, a gesture of gratitude for freeing her from the Geass that had plagued her. She returns to the service of the Britannian throne under the rule of Empress Nunnally vi Britannia, having found resolution to the fractured identity and lost memories that defined her earlier life.
