Description
Marianne vi Britannia is a pivotal figure in Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, introduced as the late fifth Empress of the Holy Britannian Empire and the mother of Lelouch and Nunnally vi Britannia. She was born a commoner under the maiden name Marianne Lamperouge. Despite her humble origins, she rose through the military ranks solely on merit, earning the nickname Marianne the Flash for her extraordinary speed and reflexes, both as a Knightmare Frame pilot and in combat. She became a Knight of the Round, initially serving as the Knight of Six, and later played a key role in supporting Prince Charles zi Britannia during the bloody succession war known as the Emblem of Blood. After Charles ascended the throne, she married him and became one of his empresses, a position that drew intense hostility from the nobility and other consorts due to her commoner background.

Personality-wise, Marianne was described as beautiful, sweet, and kind-hearted, but also possessed a rebellious and fiercely protective spirit. She was known for unconventional behavior, such as riding a horse into the palace audience chamber and picking a fight with several of the emperor’s other wives. Her protective instincts toward her children were especially strong, and she did not hesitate to intimidate those who mistreated them. She also possessed a playful and teasing side, particularly in her conversations with C.C.

Marianne made a contract with the immortal C.C. and received a Geass, which did not manifest until her death. Her Geass allowed her to transfer her spirit and Geass ability into another person upon the moment of her mortal injury. This ability activated when she was assassinated in the Aries Imperial Villa by V.V., who was jealous of her closeness with Charles. She transferred her consciousness into the young Anya Alstreim, who was present at the scene, enabling her to survive in a disembodied state. From within Anya’s mind, Marianne communicated telepathically with C.C. and continued to influence events from the shadows.

Her motivations were deeply tied to Charles’s grand plan, the Ragnarök Connection, which aimed to merge human consciousness into a collective, world without lies. Marianne supported this vision and worked alongside Charles and C.C. to bring it about. Her role in the story is that of a mysterious, ever-present figure behind the scenes: her death was the catalyst for Lelouch’s quest for justice and his rebellion, yet she was later revealed to be an antagonist who sided with Charles against her son. In the final arc of R2, she emerges from Anya’s body to confront Lelouch directly, attempting to aid Charles in triggering the Ragnarök. However, Lelouch ultimately uses his Geass to turn the disembodied gods against them, leading to her final death.

Key relationships include her bond with Charles, whose ideals she shared and for whom she fought; her deep love for Lelouch and Nunnally, though she prioritized her plan over their well-being; her complex connection with C.C., both as contractor and confidante; and her influence on Cornelia li Britannia, whom she trained and who idolized her. She also maintained ties with the Ashford family, who supported her as a test pilot for the Ganymede Knightmare Frame.

Development-wise, Marianne transforms from a beloved figure of mystery into a revealed antagonist. Her character expands from a tragic mother to a willing participant in a world-altering scheme, showing that her rebellious and idealistic nature ultimately aligned with Charles’s ambition rather than with her son’s fight for freedom. Her notable abilities include extraordinary Knightmare Frame piloting, masterful swordsmanship, and her unique Geass of consciousness transfer, which allowed her to evade death and manipulate events for years.
