Description
Lelouch vi Britannia is the main protagonist of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2. He was born on December 5, 2000 a.t.b. as the eleventh prince of the Holy Britannian Empire, seventeenth in line to the throne. After the assassination of his mother, Empress Marianne vi Britannia, and the injury of his younger sister Nunnally, a ten-year-old Lelouch confronted his father, Emperor Charles zi Britannia. The confrontation led to his exile, along with Nunnally, to Japan, where they were used as political hostages. Following the Britannian invasion of Japan, Lelouch and Nunnally were presumed dead and began a new life under the alias Lelouch Lamperouge with the help of the Ashford family.

At the start of the second season, R2, Lelouch is living a subdued life at Ashford Academy, having been stripped of his memories of the events of the first season. C.C., the immortal witch who had previously granted him the Geass, reawakens his memories and restores his power, reigniting his rebellion. Under the masked identity of Zero, he rebuilds the Black Knights and continues his campaign against the Britannian Empire.

Personality-wise, Lelouch is highly intelligent, calculating, and often stoic. He views his schoolwork as trivial and is openly disinterested in daily affairs, yet he can be exceptionally charming and charismatic when needed. His demeanor as Zero is commanding and inspiring, while as a student he appears easygoing and likable. Beneath this mask lies a ruthless and manipulative strategist who is willing to sacrifice personal relationships and commit morally ambiguous acts for the sake of his goals. Despite this, he shows deep compassion for those he cares about, especially his sister Nunnally, and can be emotionally vulnerable with close allies like C.C.

His primary motivation throughout the series is to create a peaceful world where Nunnally can live happily and safely. This drive initially stems from revenge against his father and the empire for the death of his mother, but it evolves into a broader desire to reshape the world order. In R2, his personal vendetta expands to include confronting his father directly and ultimately orchestrating the Zero Requiem, a grand plan in which he becomes a tyrant to unite the world against him and then allows himself to be publicly assassinated, thereby forging lasting global peace.

Lelouch’s role in the story is that of the central figure who drives the rebellion against Britannia. As Zero, he is the charismatic founder and leader of the Black Knights, a resistance organization that fights for Japan’s liberation and global justice. In the latter part of R2, after confronting his father and seizing control of the empire, he declares himself Emperor of Britannia and positions himself as the world’s ultimate villain. His actions set the stage for the Zero Requiem, the climactic event that concludes the series.

Key relationships shape Lelouch’s journey. Nunnally vi Britannia is his beloved younger sister and the emotional anchor of all his efforts. His bond with Suzaku Kururugi is central to the story; they were childhood friends who become ideological enemies and rivals, but eventually conspire together to execute the Zero Requiem, with Suzaku taking on the mantle of Zero to kill Lelouch. C.C. is his enigmatic contractor and partner, who grants him the Geass and shares a deep, codependent bond with him, often acting as his confidante and occasional betrayer. Kallen Kozuki is a loyal Black Knights ace pilot who harbors romantic feelings for him, though she is ultimately heartbroken by his deceptions. Rolo Lamperouge is a fabricated younger brother planted by the Geass Directorate; he develops genuine attachment and sacrifices himself to save Lelouch. Schneizel el Britannia, Lelouch’s half-brother, is his primary strategic rival in R2, representing a contrasting utilitarian worldview.

Lelouch undergoes significant development across R2. He begins the season amnesiac and detached, but regaining his memories reignites his vengeful drive. He becomes increasingly willing to manipulate friends and enemies alike, and his moral compromises grow heavier as he confronts his father and brother. His arc peaks with the Zero Requiem, a sacrificial scheme that transforms him from a revolutionary into a hated dictator, allowing him to achieve his ideal of global peace through his own death.

Lelouch’s notable abilities include the Geass, the power of absolute obedience, which allows him to compel anyone to follow a single command after making eye contact. The Geass can only be used once per person, and in R2 it becomes fully active and can be used repeatedly without eye contact restrictions. He is a genius-level strategist and tactician, able to outmaneuver entire armies and predict opponents’ moves many steps ahead. He is also a charismatic leader who inspires unwavering loyalty, and he is a competent pilot of advanced Knightmare frames, particularly the Shinkirō. His intellect extends to politics, psychological warfare, and manipulation, making him one of anime’s most masterfully portrayed antiheroes.
