Description
Kyoshirou Toudou is a former officer in the Japanese military, holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He is introduced as a distinguished and highly capable commander, famously known as "Toudou of Miracles" for being the only person to have won a battle against the forces of the Holy Britannian Empire during their invasion of Japan. This victory, achieved without the use of Knightmare Frames, is referred to as the Miracle of Itsukushima. His reputation for tactical brilliance is well-respected by both his allies and his enemies.

In terms of personality, Toudou is portrayed as a disciplined, stoic, and principled warrior. He is a man of few words who often meditates and prefers to seek thoughtful solutions rather than rush into conflict. Despite his fearsome reputation on the battlefield, he despises unnecessary violence and will only fight to protect his country and the people close to him. He holds a deep sense of honor and duty, showing respect even to his adversaries. This sense of honor can make him appear reserved or hesitant, but it is underpinned by a fierce commitment to Japan's liberation.

Toudou's primary motivation is the freedom and restoration of his homeland, which has been renamed Area 11 by its Britannian conquerors. He initially serves as a key member of the resistance group known as the Japan Liberation Front, acting as the leader of its elite unit, the Four Holy Swords, a group of four devoted followers. After the Front is destroyed by Britannian forces and he is captured, he is rescued by the masked revolutionary Zero, who seeks to recruit him. Though initially resigned to death, Toudou is persuaded to join Zero's organization, the Order of the Black Knights. He becomes the head of military operations for the Black Knights, recognizing Zero as the only man capable of freeing Japan, even after Zero's sudden disappearance during a previous uprising.

His most significant relationships include his former student, Suzaku Kururugi, whose ideals he understands better than most other Japanese people. This shared history creates a complex dynamic, as Suzaku becomes a primary antagonist fighting for Britannia. Toudou is also the revered leader of the Four Holy Swords, which includes the loyal Nagisa Chiba, who holds deep personal feelings for him. Within the Black Knights, he is a vital strategist and field commander, whose abilities are respected by his comrades and by Zero, though he lacks the same charismatic leadership that defines the organization's masked creator.

Over the course of the story, particularly in R2, Toudou's unwavering faith in Zero is tested. He follows Zero into exile and participates in operations across the Chinese Federation, eventually being named Chief of Staff of the Black Knights when they become the official military of the United Federation of Nations. His loyalty reaches a breaking point when he learns of Zero's true identity as Lelouch vi Britannia and the existence of Geass, a power that can manipulate minds. Feeling betrayed and manipulated, Toudou joins the other Black Knights leaders in a coup, even directing the firing squad that attempts to execute Lelouch. He later aligns with Schneizel el Britannia to oppose Lelouch when the latter seizes the imperial throne. In the final battle, his personal Knightmare, the Zangetsu, is destroyed in a duel with Suzaku, leaving him gravely wounded and unable to continue fighting. At the story's conclusion, he witnesses the assassination of Lelouch by Suzaku, now disguised as Zero, and appears to grasp the true purpose of the event, known as the Zero Requiem. He is last seen living in peace, attending the wedding of his former comrades.

Notable abilities include his exceptional skill as a strategist and his prowess as a warrior. He is one of the few characters in the series capable of piloting a Knightmare Frame at a level rivaling Suzaku, while simultaneously possessing the command experience to lead large-scale military operations, a rare combination of skills. His tactical acumen is such that even Lelouch, a genius strategist, highly values his input and leadership on the battlefield.
