Description
Kyoushirou Toudou is a former lieutenant colonel in the Japanese military and the leader of the Four Holy Swords, a unit that operated within the Japan Liberation Front. He earned the nickname Toudou of Miracles for the Miracle of Itsukushima, a battle during the initial Britannian invasion in which he forced the empire to retreat without using Knightmare Frames, making him the only person to have won a battle against Britannia in that war. This feat made him a legendary figure in the Japanese resistance and a spiritual pillar for many who opposed the occupation. He is often seen carrying a katana and is a highly skilled swordsman and tactician.

Toudou is a serious, principled, and deeply loyal man with a fierce love for Japan and a strong sense of duty. He cares intensely for his fellow soldiers and is prepared to sacrifice his own life for his cause. This devotion is illustrated when, after the death of his commanding officer, General Katase, he resigns himself to death and allows himself to be captured, intending to follow his general into the afterlife. He is nonetheless persuaded to continue fighting when Zero rescues him and convinces him that he must see through the promise of victory that the Miracle of Itsukushima created. Toudou values honor and responsibility, and he believes a leader must be willing to take the first risk in order to earn the right to lead others.

Within the Black Knights, Toudou serves as the head of military operations and later as chief of staff of the United Federation of Nations' army. He leads Black Knight forces in liberation campaigns across the Chinese Federation and the Middle East. He is one of the few people who understands the ideals of Suzaku Kururugi, whom he trained in martial arts and swordsmanship during Suzaku's childhood. Toudou respects Suzaku's resolve even though their paths diverge.

After the Black Rebellion, Toudou remains faithful to Zero, reasoning that Zero must have had good reasons for not revealing his plans. However, when Prince Schneizel reveals Zero's true identity as Lelouch vi Britannia and the nature of his Geass power, Toudou is deeply shaken. The implication that General Katase and other leaders may have been manipulated by Geass sways him, and he joins the other Black Knights in betraying Zero. During the final battle over the Damocles, Toudou is grievously injured but insists on continuing to fight, taking responsibility for starting the revolution. He survives the war and later retires from active command, eventually founding a defense academy to train future members of the Black Knights. Throughout the series, Toudou's abilities as a strategist, swordsman, and Knightmare pilot make him a formidable and respected figure in the struggle for Japan's liberation.
