Description
Neji Hyuga is a shinobi of Konohagakure born into the prestigious Hyuga clan. Despite being a prodigy even by the clan's high standards, he belonged to the branch house. As a child, he was cheerful and optimistic, but his worldview darkened after learning that members of the branch family were marked with a cursed seal on the forehead, which the main house could activate to inflict excruciating pain or even death. He developed a deep resentment toward the main house, particularly his cousin Hinata, after he was told that his father, Hizashi, had been forced to die in place of the main house head, Hiashi. This led Neji to adopt a fatalistic philosophy: that a person's destiny is fixed at birth and cannot be changed no matter how hard one struggles.

Neji's personality at the beginning of the story is cold, cynical, and arrogant. He believes that the weak are destined to perish and that individuals are bound by the circumstances of their birth. He harbors a bitter hatred toward Hinata, viewing her as the symbol of the main house that oppressed him. His primary motivation during this period is to prove his superiority and to demonstrate that even a branch member can surpass the main house, though he remains trapped in the belief that his fate is sealed.

Neji's role in the story begins in the Chunin Exams, where he is introduced as the strongest genin of his class and a fearsome opponent. He defeats Hinata brutally in the preliminary round and later faces Naruto Uzumaki in the finals. During the fight, Neji mocks Naruto as a loser fated to fail, but Naruto's determination and clever use of shadow clones lead to Neji's first real defeat. This loss, combined with a subsequent revelation from Hiashi that Hizashi chose to sacrifice himself voluntarily out of love for his brother and his son, begins to transform Neji's beliefs. He starts to understand that destiny can be changed through one's own choices and bonds with others.

Over time, Neji develops into a more composed, selfless, and loyal individual. He is promoted to jonin, becoming one of Konoha's most capable ninja. His motivations shift from proving himself to protecting his comrades. He grows close to his teammates Rock Lee and Tenten, forming a strong bond of mutual respect and trust. He also undergoes a significant change in his relationship with Hinata, evolving from hostility to a protective and caring stance. He becomes someone who quietly supports and trains her, and he comes to see her as family he wants to defend.

Neji's notable abilities revolve around the Byakugan, a dojutsu that grants him near-total 360-degree vision and the ability to see the chakra pathway system inside opponents. He is a master of the Gentle Fist fighting style, which targets the body's chakra points to disrupt or shut down an opponent's ability to use chakra. His signature techniques include the Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms, a rapid series of strikes that closes sixty-four chakra points, and the Rotation, a defensive technique that repels almost any attack by spinning and releasing chakra from all directions. He also develops the Air Palm, a long-range attack that sends a shockwave of chakra to damage internal organs from a distance. These abilities make him a versatile and formidable fighter, strong in both offense and defense.

Neji's development culminates during the Fourth Great Ninja War. Now a jonin and a leader on the battlefield, he fights alongside the Allied Shinobi Forces. When the Ten-Tails unleashes a lethal volley of wooden spears aimed at Naruto and Hinata, Neji throws himself in front of them, taking the fatal blows. In his final moments, he tells Naruto that he chose his own death, thereby fulfilling his own will. His sacrifice completes his journey from a man who believed in a predetermined fate to one who shaped his own destiny through selfless love and choice.
