Description
Nagato, known primarily by the alias Pain, is a shinobi from the Village Hidden in the Rain, Amegakure, and a descendant of the Uzumaki clan. His early life was defined by tragedy during the Second Shinobi World War. When he was very young, his parents were accidentally killed by Konoha ninja who mistook them for enemies. This trauma caused his Rinnegan, a legendary dōjutsu that was secretly transplanted into him by Madara Uchiha, to awaken for the first time, and he used it to kill the attackers in a fit of grief and rage.
Left as an orphan, Nagato was eventually found by two other war orphans, Yahiko and Konan. The three formed a close bond, sharing a dream of bringing peace to their war-torn home. They were later taken in and trained for three years by Jiraiya, one of the legendary Sannin, who recognized Nagato's Rinnegan and believed he might be the reincarnation of the Sage of Six Paths, a child of prophecy who would bring peace to the world. Under Jiraiya's guidance, Nagato became exceptionally skilled, mastering all the techniques he was taught due to the power of his Rinnegan.
Together with Yahiko and Konan, Nagato founded an organization named Akatsuki, with the original goal of advocating for peace and ending war. However, their efforts drew the attention of Hanzo, the leader of Amegakure, who felt threatened. In a trap orchestrated by Hanzo and Danzo Shimura, Konan was taken hostage. To prevent Nagato from being forced to kill his friend, Yahiko impaled himself on Nagato's kunai, using his dying breath to express his faith that Nagato would change the world.
Yahiko's death shattered Nagato's idealism. He concluded that true peace was impossible through naive hope and that the only way to break the endless cycle of hatred was to force the world to understand pain on a massive scale. He adopted the name Pain, declared himself a god of destruction, and took control of Akatsuki, transforming it into a mercenary organization of S-rank missing-nin that sought to capture the nine tailed beasts. To compensate for the damage to his body from summoning the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, which left him frail and immobile, he created the Six Paths of Pain. This system allowed him to remotely control six dead bodies, each possessing a different ability linked to the Rinnegan. The most important of these was the Deva Path, which used Yahiko's body, symbolizing Nagato's desire to have his friend continue to lead the organization in spirit.
Nagato's primary motivation was to create a weapon of ultimate destruction from the tailed beasts, a weapon so powerful that it would instantly inflict catastrophic pain on any nation that dared to wage war. This, he believed, would create a forced peace through shared suffering and fear. He led the Six Paths of Pain to Konohagakure, the Village Hidden in the Leaves, where he killed his former teacher, Jiraiya, and then proceeded to annihilate the entire village using the Deva Path's technique, Almighty Push, killing countless people.
His role in the story culminates in a confrontation with Naruto Uzumaki. After Naruto defeats all six paths, he confronts the immobilized Nagato. An extended philosophical debate follows, where Nagato details his philosophy of peace through pain, citing his own losses. Naruto, understanding the same pain of losing loved ones, rejects this ideology, insisting on a different path. Naruto argues that he will find a way to break the cycle of hatred, trusting in the beliefs of his teacher, Jiraiya. Moved by Naruto's resolve and reminded of Yahiko's original dream, Nagato has a change of heart. He decides to place his faith in Naruto. Using the Rinnegan's ultimate technique, Outer Path — Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique, he sacrifices his own life to revive every person he killed in his attack on Konohagakure, asking Naruto to carry on the dream of peace. He then dies in Konan's arms.
Nagato's key relationships are central to his development. His bond with Yahiko represents his initial hope and the source of his original idealism. Yahiko's death was the catalyst for his fall into nihilistic extremism. His relationship with Konan is one of deep loyalty and partnership, as she remained his devoted friend and ally until the end. His training under Jiraiya shaped his skills and planted the seeds of his ideology, even as he later twisted his master's teachings. His confrontation with Naruto, who is also an Uzumaki and a student of Jiraiya's ideals, serves as the mirror that allows him to finally see the error of his path.
Notable abilities all derive from his Rinnegan. He possesses the Six Paths of Pain, each with a distinct function. The Deva Path controls attractive and repulsive forces, including techniques like Almighty Push and Universal Pull, as well as the planet-destroying Chibaku Tensei. The Animal Path can summon a variety of creatures. The Human Path can extract souls and read minds. The Asura Path can mechanize its body with weapons. The Preta Path can absorb chakra and ninjutsu. The Naraka Path can restore damaged paths and interrogate the dead. Nagato himself also had immense chakra reserves due to his Uzumaki lineage, mastery over all nature transformations, and the ability to use sensory perception. Ultimately, he possessed the ultimate technique to resurrect the dead at the cost of his own life.
