Description
Kaguya Otsutsuki is a central figure in the lore of the series, known as the Progenitor of Chakra and the matriarch of the Otsutsuki clan. She arrived on Earth from a distant land or another dimension alongside her partner, Isshiki Otsutsuki, with the original purpose of planting the God Tree to harvest its chakra fruit for their clan's benefit. As the lower-ranking member of the pair, Kaguya was intended to be a living sacrifice for the Ten-Tails seedling to cultivate the God Tree. However, upon witnessing humanity's constant wars, she developed an affection for them and betrayed Isshiki, consuming the forbidden fruit of the God Tree for herself. This act granted her immense, god-like power, allowing her to single-handedly end the endless conflicts, which earned her the reverent title of the Rabbit Goddess.
Initially, Kaguya’s motivations appeared to be rooted in a desire for peace, using her overwhelming strength to subjugate humanity and stop their wars. In time, however, her power corrupted her, and her methods became tyrannical. Her primary motivation shifted from peacekeeping to absolute control and self-preservation. She feared other members of her clan, who would eventually come to claim the chakra fruit she had stolen. To prepare for their arrival, Kaguya used the Infinite Tsukuyomi, a powerful genjutsu, on humanity, ensnaring people in the God Tree's roots to convert their life force into an army of soldiers known as White Zetsu. Her personality became marked by a cold, arrogant, and domineering demeanor, viewing the world as her personal nursery and demanding complete obedience. Despite this, echoes of her original humanity remained, particularly concerning her children, which became a point of emotional vulnerability.
Kaguya bore two sons, Hagoromo and Hamura, who inherited her chakra. Hagoromo would later become known as the Sage of Six Paths. When her sons discovered the truth behind the White Zetsu and opposed her practice of sacrificing humans to the God Tree, a deep rift formed. Viewing their rebellion as a betrayal and moving to reclaim the chakra she believed was hers, Kaguya merged with the God Tree to become the monstrous Ten-Tails and confronted them. The ensuing battle raged for months, causing immense destruction, but ultimately, Hagoromo and Hamura succeeded in sealing their mother within a massive rock using a Six Paths—Chibaku Tensei. This orbital prison would become the moon. Before her sealing, Kaguya manifested her will into a physical form, Black Zetsu, who spent centuries manipulating shinobi history, including Madara Uchiha, to orchestrate her eventual resurrection.
Her role in the main storyline culminates when Black Zetsu successfully betrays Madara Uchiha after he had activated the Infinite Tsukuyomi, using his body as a vessel to revive Kaguya. Upon her return, she faced a reincarnation of her sons' conflict in the form of Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, who had been granted power by Hagoromo. Her development during this final confrontation is limited but reveals her as a tragic figure driven by a possessive, almost childlike desire for a world without conflict, yet unable to trust anyone other than herself to maintain it. Her inability to strategize without Black Zetsu's guidance and her fixation on absorbing her opponents' chakra rather than immediately destroying them ultimately led to her defeat, as Team 7 worked together to land a sealing touch, trapping her once again in another dimension.
Kaguya possesses a vast array of extraordinary abilities, making her the most powerful character in the series. Her chakra reserves are described as exceeding even those of the Ten-Tails. She wields several dojutsu, including the Byakugan in both eyes, which grants her near-omnidirectional vision and the ability to see chakra points, and the Rinne Sharingan, a third eye on her forehead that is the source of her most potent techniques. Her primary ability is Amenominaka, a spacetime ninjutsu that allows her to instantly transport herself and anyone in her vicinity to one of several alternate dimensions she controls, including lava, ice, desert, and acid worlds. Using Yomotsuhirasaka, she can tear open portals to travel between these dimensions at will. Offensively, she can manifest massive chakra arms to pummel her targets with the Eighty Gods Vacuum Attack, strong enough to shatter a Perfect Susanoo. Her most lethal technique is the All-Killing Ash Bones, which disintegrates anything it pierces on a molecular level. She also possesses incredible regenerative abilities and is functionally immortal, incapable of being killed and only vulnerable to being sealed away.
