Description
Chiyo is a retired counsellor from Sunagakure, the hidden village of sand, who comes from an older generation of ninja known for their pragmatic and often hardened worldview. She is the elder sister of Ebizō and the paternal grandmother of Sasori, a missing-nin who becomes a member of the criminal organization Akatsuki. Known respectfully by her villagers as Honoured Grandmother Chiyo, she led the village's Puppet Brigade in her prime and was a renowned master of both the puppet technique and the creation of poisons. Her desire for revenge is deeply personal; she wishes to kill Sakumo Hatake, the father of Kakashi, for killing her son and daughter-in-law, an act that left Sasori an orphan. Chiyo took in Sasori and taught him the art of puppetry to ease his pain, and she later watched with growing concern as he immersed himself in the craft, eventually creating human puppets from corpses before abandoning their village.
In the present story, Chiyo is an elderly woman of seventy-three, with grey hair tied in a bun and deep wrinkles marking her face, yet she remains a formidable shinobi. Her personality is a blend of bitterness and mischief. Having withdrawn from village affairs to fish quietly with her brother, she often plays dead to startle him or acts senile to fool others. She is initially pessimistic and detached, believing the next generation should solve its own problems and dismissing the alliance with Konohagakure as a sign of weakness. Her old grudges linger prominently, particularly against Tsunade, the Fifth Hokage, who famously created antidotes for all of Chiyo’s poisons during the war, earning her the mocking nickname "that slug girl" from the elder. She also carries deep regret for her role in sealing the One-Tailed Shukaku inside a young Gaara under the orders of the Fourth Kazekage, an act she later views as a grave mistake.
Chiyo is drawn back into the life of a ninja when Gaara, now the Fifth Kazekage, is abducted by Akatsuki and her grandson Sasori poisons Kankurō. She agrees to help primarily for the chance to see Sasori again. Joining Team Kakashi on the rescue mission, she initially attacks Kakashi, having mistaken him for his father. However, her rigid views begin to change through her partnership with Sakura Haruno, Tsunade’s apprentice. Despite her rivalry with Tsunade, Chiyo comes to care for and deeply respect Sakura for her skill and bravery. In the climactic battle against Sasori, a fight that showcases the full mastery of both puppeteers, Chiyo uses the Father and Mother puppets to land a final, fatal blow on her grandson, who allows the attack as an embrace from the parents he lost. After the battle, despite having accomplished her goal, Chiyo chooses to atone for her past. She uses a forbidden technique of her own creation, the One’s Own Life Reincarnation, a jutsu that can bring the dead back to life at the cost of the user's own existence. She sacrifices herself to revive Gaara, not only as an act of repentance for sealing the beast within him but also in the hope that his bond with Naruto Uzumaki will forge a true and lasting alliance between their villages.
Chiyo’s skills are legendary. As a puppeteer, she is considered one of the greatest in history, capable of manipulating ten puppets simultaneously, a feat that defines a master. Her strongest set is the Chikamatsu Collection, ten puppets originally created by the art’s founder, which can work in unison to perform powerful jutsu. She also possesses the secret technique of the Puppet Performance: Skilful Achievement with a Human Body, allowing her to control a living person with her chakra threads to fight as if they were her puppet. Beyond her puppetry, she is an expert medical-nin and a poison specialist, having once been able to craft and counter even the deadliest toxins. Her ultimate technique, the One’s Own Life Reincarnation, is a life-transferring jutsu that can rewind the flow of life, making the ultimate sacrifice of her own life to heal another or grant a puppet a living soul. Chiyo meets her end with a smile, having overcome her regrets and chosen to give her life for the future of the younger generation.
