Description
Makoto Kino is a tall, strong teenage girl who stands out both physically and in personality. She is introduced as a transfer student to Juuban Municipal Junior High School, where she quickly becomes known as the fourth Sailor Guardian to join Usagi Tsukino's team. One of the most defining aspects of Makoto’s background is the loss of her parents in an airplane accident when she was young. This tragedy forced her to become fiercely independent, and she lives alone in an apartment, taking care of all her own needs. The trauma of the event left her with a deep-seated fear of airplanes. Because of her unusual height for a Japanese student, her considerable physical strength, and her reputation for having been in fights, she is often initially mistaken for a delinquent or troublemaker by her peers.

Despite her intimidating exterior, Makoto possesses a deeply gentle and warm-hearted personality. She embodies a unique duality, being both the most masculine and most feminine of the inner Sailor Guardians. She is physically the strongest of the group and is known to practice martial arts and karate. Yet, she also possesses a very nurturing and domestic side, taking great pleasure in cooking, gardening, flower arranging, and handicrafts. Her personal dream is not one of power or glory, but a simple, happy life: she hopes to one day get married and open a combined flower and cake shop. She is a romantic at heart, which is often played for humor through her frequent tendency to develop crushes on older or aloof young men, often remarking that they remind her of an unnamed older boy who once broke her heart.

Makoto’s primary motivation as a Sailor Guardian stems from her sense of loyalty and her need for the family she has found with her friends. Having been alone for so long, her bond with Usagi Tsukino, Ami Mizuno, Rei Hino, and Minako Aino gives her a sense of belonging she deeply craves. She is fiercely protective of them, acting as the group's physical shield and muscle. In battle, she is courageous and determined, never hesitating to put herself in harm's way for the sake of others. Her relationships with the other guardians are built on mutual respect; she often acts as a supportive older sister figure, though her romantic rivalries or shared interests with Minako sometimes lead to spirited arguments.

Throughout the Sailor Moon SuperS era, Makoto continues to develop both as a person and as a warrior. As her friends grow stronger, she remains a reliable pillar of support, though she is not immune to the challenges they face. Her boy-crazy nature persists, but it is tempered by her growing maturity. A key development for her in this period is the acquisition of a new transformation device, the Crystal Change Rod, gifted by the mystical entity Pegasus. This allows her to power up into her Super Sailor Jupiter form, granting her access to significantly stronger attacks.

As Sailor Jupiter, Makoto’s notable abilities center on the dual elements of electricity and plants, though she is best known for her devastating lightning-based attacks. In her civilian form, she relies on her superhuman strength and martial arts training to subdue opponents. When transformed, she uses the phrase Jupiter Power, Make Up to don her green and pink sailor uniform. Her signature ability is Supreme Thunder, where she extends a lightning rod from her tiara to call down a powerful bolt of electricity. During the SuperS season, with her upgrade to Super Sailor Jupiter, she unlocks her ultimate attack, Jupiter Oak Evolution. True to her dual nature, this technique combines her plant-based affinity with her electric powers, creating a spinning vortex of energy that strikes her enemies with immense force.
