Description
PallaPalla, also written as Palla-Palla, is a recurring character in the anime Sailor Moon SuperS, where she appears as one of the four members of the Amazoness Quartet serving the Dead Moon Circus. She is introduced as an acrobatic performer of the circus, known as its ball rider and given the title Magician of Balancing Balls. She rides and walks atop a giant ball and uses it to roll over and flatten her enemies. She has short blue hair and blue eyes and, in the anime, is the youngest and most childlike of the four sisters.
Her personality is defined by a strongly childish demeanor. She speaks about herself in the third person, enjoys playful behavior and games, and is described as something of a crybaby and a scatterbrain. Beneath her innocent appearance, however, her childishness can take on a violent and unsettling edge; in one episode she tears the head off her own doll as a cure for its toothache. Other characters regard her as dangerous, and she occasionally shows signs of cleverness despite her naive manner.
As a member of the Amazoness Quartet, PallaPalla follows the orders of Zirconia and ultimately of Queen Nehelenia. The group's mission is to search the dreams of human beings for Pegasus, whom Nehelenia wishes to capture, and PallaPalla works alongside her fellow members JunJun, CereCere, and VesVes to manipulate and control people's dreams in order to draw Pegasus out. Among the quartet, she uses magic more often than the others. In the original manga and in Sailor Moon Crystal, she is the one who creates the Amazon Trio, and in the anime her magic lets her swap the ages of Usagi Tsukino and Chibiusa, causing considerable confusion for the heroes.
Her combat style revolves around balls. She summons ball-shaped Lemures, the monster servants of the circus, and often attacks groups of people at once rather than single opponents. Dolls also figure into some of her attacks, though less prominently than balls. Her main magical tool is her Amazon Stone, which she uses to cast spells that produce a variety of magical effects.
The story later reveals a different origin behind her villainous role. PallaPalla's true identity is Sailor Pallas, one of the Sailor Quartet, four Sailor Guardians meant to protect Chibiusa, the future princess of the Moon Kingdom. Her sleeping star power was detected by Queen Nehelenia, who forced her to awaken under a curse and serve the Dead Moon Circus as part of the Amazoness Quartet. Her name comes from the asteroid Pallas and from the Greek goddess Pallas Athena, and her blue color scheme reflects that celestial connection. In the manga she is the second eldest of the four sisters, while in the anime she is the youngest, a detail that corresponds to the relative size of the asteroid.
PallaPalla does not remain a villain throughout the story. After the Amazoness Quartet are defeated and reduced to their Amazon Stones, Sailor Saturn brings the stones to Neo-Queen Serenity, who uses her power to restore them. PallaPalla then awakens as Sailor Pallas and returns to her original purpose as one of the four protectors of Chibiusa, completing her shift from a manipulated servant of Queen Nehelenia to a guardian of the future Moon Kingdom.
