Description
Queen Nehelenia, whose name derives from the ancient goddess Nehalennia, is the principal antagonist of the fourth season of the anime series Sailor Moon SuperS and the ruler of the Dead Moon Circus. She is the self-styled queen of the Dead Moon, a dark realm described as the new moon or the dark center of the moon. In the anime's telling of her background, she governed a lonely, cold asteroid and held a single ruling dream: to remain young and beautiful forever. When she looked into an enchanted mirror and saw herself aged and unappealing, the shock of the vision drove her to consume the dreams of the people of her kingdom in order to preserve her own beauty. Her subjects were transformed into creatures called Lemures, and together they came to make up the Dead Moon Circus that serves her in the mortal world.

In appearance, Nehelenia is a graceful and strikingly lovely woman with pale skin, pointed ears, and long, wavy dark blue hair styled into buns and ponytails. She wears a long dress and cloak decorated with a spiderweb pattern, a design that hints at her trapping nature. Her personality is a mixture of regal poise and deep insecurity. Beneath her elegant and confident exterior, she is vain, proud, envious, and cruel. Her obsessive fear of aging and ugliness makes her resentful of everyone who possesses youth, joy, or love, and she becomes manipulative and ruthless in her pursuit of what she believes she is owed. Her motivations are rooted in the terror of losing her beauty and being forgotten, which twists into a desire to seize the beauty and happiness of others for herself.

Her role in the story of Sailor Moon SuperS centers on spreading nightmares across the earth and seeking the Golden Crystal, a legendary source of beautiful dreams. To reach it, she targets Helios, the guardian of Elysion, and works to capture him, while her minions steal the dream mirrors of ordinary people. She also attacks and captures Mamoru, the partner of the series' heroine Sailor Moon, using him as a means of weakening her enemies. Within the narrative, Nehelenia functions as a dark mirror to Sailor Moon herself, representing what a dream of eternal beauty can become when it is twisted by fear and selfishness.

Her key relationships are defined by opposition and control. She stands as the dark counterpart to Queen Serenity, the queen of the light side of the moon, and she is the primary foe of Sailor Moon, whose compassion and love she envies. She seeks Helios in order to steal the Golden Crystal, threatens the dreams of Chibiusa, and commands Zirconia, the leader of the Dead Moon Circus who acts as her servant and enforcer. She also corrupts the Amazoness Quartet, young guardians from the future, and places them under her control. Even her own subjects are not spared, as she consumes their dreams and leaves them transformed into her monstrous servants.

Nehelenia's development is tied to the revelation of her tragic past. She was once a lonely child ruling a desolate asteroid, and her magic mirror twisted her mind, filling her with fear of aging, jealousy, and narcissism. Her great flaw was an inability to accept change or the passage of time, and so she turned to consuming the very dreams that might have sustained her. In the resolution of her story, which carries into the beginning of the following season, Sailor Moon refuses to destroy her. Instead, she reaches out with understanding, learns of Nehelenia's suffering, and forgives her. This act of compassion purifies Nehelenia and returns her to a childlike state, granting her the chance to be reborn and begin her life again, freed from the influence of the mirror.

In terms of abilities, Nehelenia commands powerful dark magic. She can project waves of dark energy, fire spiderlike threads from her hands, and is highly resistant to most attacks directed against her. She is skilled in casting curses, creating and spreading nightmares, and consuming the dreams of others. She can transform people into creatures such as the Lemures, and she can seize control of the minds of others, as she does with the Amazoness Quartet. Her enchanted mirror serves as a tool for scrying and psychological torment, and her connection to the Dead Moon allows her to send her forces into the dream world. Her magic is closely tied to mirrors, shadows, and the dark side of the moon, making her a formidable and deeply tragic adversary.
