Description
Cere-Cere is a character from the fourth season of the Sailor Moon anime, Sailor Moon SuperS, where she serves as a member of the Amazoness Quartet, a group of young girls working for the Dead Moon Circus. As a member of this organization, her primary mission is to locate Pegasus, a mystical being who hides within the dreams of humans, and to obtain the Golden Crystal he protects.
In terms of appearance, Cere-Cere has long light-pink hair styled into two outward braids, a bun on top of her head, and dark red eyes. She also has a dark purple jewel on her forehead. Her circus outfit consists of a purple bra with a pink outline, a matching bikini bottom, a light yellow skirt, leggings, and pink ballet slipper-like shoes. Among the four members of the Quartet, Cere-Cere is distinguished as the oldest, the most mature, and the most feminine. Her role within the circus is that of a trapeze artist, and she is known as the Flower Magician, a title that reflects her powers and elegant demeanor.
Her personality is marked by a significant degree of arrogance and haughtiness, as she considers herself very beautiful and often chases after people who she believes can highlight or validate her perceived beauty. This vanity is illustrated when she encounters a young street artist and insists he paint her portrait, only to force him to redo the work because she feels the painting does not capture her true, superior beauty. Despite this mature and sometimes bossy attitude, she is not above breaking her sophisticated facade to simply play and have fun with her sisters in the Quartet.
Cere-Cere possesses several notable abilities, all stemming from her yellow Amazon Stone, a magical orb given to her by Queen Nehelenia. This stone allows her to perform attacks such as the Colliding Ball, which extracts a person's Dream Mirror, a necessary step to find Pegasus. She can also perform the Pelting Ball and Opening Ball attacks. True to her title as Flower Magician, she can create and manipulate plants, summoning man-eating flowers and plant-based monsters known as Lemures. She also has the ability to hypnotize others, which she uses to make people fall asleep or to even control her fellow Quartet members to complete a mission herself.
Her relationships with other characters are defined primarily by her role in the Dead Moon Circus. She works alongside her three companions, JunJun, VesVes, and PallaPalla, under the command of the witch Zirconia and the imprisoned Queen Nehelenia. They are bound to the queen by a promise of eternal youth, which allows them to remain as children forever. Although they are a team, CereCere often acts as the leader, taking the initiative and directing the others in their tasks, and she has shown a willingness to use her hypnotic powers on them to get her way.
Cere-Cere undergoes a significant development over the course of the story. Initially loyal servants of Nehelenia, she and the rest of the Amazoness Quartet are eventually imprisoned by Zirconia in mirrors, where their powers are drained. Faced with the choice of remaining as eternal children serving the queen or growing up, they rebel. In a decisive act of redemption, CereCere and her companions destroy their Amazon Stones on the ground, breaking Nehelenia's hold over them and giving up their chance at eternal childhood. Following this, they aid the Sailor Guardians in the final battle against Queen Nehelenia by devising a trick, swapping the powerful Golden Crystal with a pineapple to help Sailor Moon. After Nehelenia is defeated, they are last seen deciding to leave quietly, mentioning that they might see the Sailor Guardians again someday.
The character's name is derived from Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain, and motherly love, which is also the namesake of the dwarf planet Ceres. This naming convention ties her to the other members of the Quartet, who are all named after major asteroids. In the original manga, this connection is made explicit, as Cere-Cere is revealed to be the true Sailor Guardian Sailor Ceres, destined to protect Sailor Chibi Moon in the future, a detail that informs the thematic depth of her anime counterpart even if it is not directly explored.
