Description
Fish Eye is a fictional character from the anime series Sailor Moon SuperS, serving as a member of the Amazon Trio, a group of antagonists working for the Dead Moon Circus. In terms of his origin, Fish Eye was not originally human. He was a fish who was given a humanoid form by the circus through the power of a magic orb, a transformation that left him and his companions perpetually searching for purpose.
Physically, Fish Eye has an androgynous appearance. He presents as a male with a slender, flat-chested build, but his face is delicate and distinctly feminine. He has long, wavy blue hair that transitions into turquoise at the ends, which he typically wears in a loose ponytail secured with a red bobble. One long strand of hair often arcs over his face, reaching his collarbone. Like the other members of the Amazon Trio, Fish Eye has elf-like pointed ears, a stone embedded in his forehead, and two colored stripes on his left cheek, which are purple and indigo. His attire consists of a puffy, light blue jumpsuit with a deep V-cut and a pink fish skeleton emblem below it, paired with matching high-heeled boots. He also has webbed, scaly hands with long pink nails, reflecting his aquatic origins.
In the anime, Fish Eye's personality is a blend of vanity, theatricality, and a deep-seated vulnerability. Unlike his comrades Tiger's Eye and Hawk's Eye, who pursue women, Fish Eye openly declares he has no interest in girls and instead targets attractive young men. He is a skilled flirt and often adopts the disguise of a beautiful woman to get close to his targets, a ruse he generally maintains with great success. He can be self-absorbed and prone to getting lost in the moment, sometimes forgetting his primary mission to indulge in human activities like ballet or beauty pageants. Despite his flamboyance, he is also a frequent target of teasing from his fellow Trio members, who ridicule him for his methods and his name.
However, Fish Eye experiences significant personal development during his story arc. His motivations shift dramatically when he targets Mamoru Chiba, Sailor Moon's love interest. He becomes genuinely infatuated with Mamoru, considering himself a romantic rival to Usagi, Sailor Moon's civilian identity. This genuine affection leads him to a painful realization: unlike the humans he targets, he does not possess a beautiful Dream Mirror of his own, making him less than truly human. This existential crisis becomes his primary motivation, as he begins to desire a real dream and a genuine human life.
In the story, Fish Eye is initially sent by Zirconia, the circus's leader, to locate the legendary Pegasus, who hides within the dreams of specific individuals. His role involves extracting the Dream Mirrors from his victims to search for Pegasus. His key relationship is with his fellow Amazon Trio members, Tiger's Eye and Hawk's Eye, with whom he shares a complicated bond of rivalry and grudging loyalty. More importantly, his connection to Usagi Tsukino evolves from antagonism to something more complex. After being rejected by Mamoru, a dejected Fish Eye is shown unexpected kindness by Usagi, who invites him into her home. This experience forces him to confront his own morality and ultimately leads him to betray his mission to protect her.
Ultimately, Fish Eye is crucial to his own redemption. After his and the Amazon Trio's failure leads to Usagi's Dream Mirror being shattered, he chooses to sacrifice the magic that sustains his human form to save her. This act of selflessness causes him to revert to his original fish form, but he is subsequently revived by Pegasus and given his very own Dream Mirror, finally fulfilling his wish to become a truly independent human. He and the other members of the Trio are then taken to reside in the peaceful world of Elysion, Pegasus's realm.
Fish Eye possesses several notable abilities that he uses in his missions. He is adept at creating illusions and can summon creatures called Lemures to fight on his behalf, specializing in summoning male monsters that reflect his own preferences. His personal fighting style is somewhat unique; his preferred weapons are throwing knives, although he is noted to be a poor shot, often missing his targets. He also demonstrates other aquatic powers, including the ability to shoot water beams that can render victims unconscious and to trap enemies in a net. He can teleport or travel through circular hoops of water, and his webbed hands hint at an unknown level of aquatic affinity. A notable personal quirk is his intense and irrational fear of cats, which often causes him to panic and flee.
