Description
Ojo de Pez, whose Japanese name is Fish Eye, appears in the fourth anime season Sailor Moon SuperS as a member of the Amazon Trio, a group of villains serving the Dead Moon Circus under the witch Zirconia. He was originally an ordinary fish living in a stream, transformed into human form through magic. His appearance is deliberately androgynous, with long pale blue hair that shifts to turquoise at the ends, blue eyes, a jewel embedded in his forehead, elf-like ears, colorful marks on his cheek, and hands that remain scaled, webbed, and finished with long pink nails, hinting at his animal origins. He wears a light blue jumpsuit and heeled boots, and his delicate, feminine presentation often leads others to mistake him for a woman, although he is male.
In the anime version of the story, Ojo de Pez's role is to investigate the dreams of ordinary people in Tokyo in order to locate Pegasus, the dream spirit who hides within the dream of a chosen person. If captured, Pegasus and his Golden Crystal would allow Nehelenia and the Dead Moon Circus to destroy human dreams and illusions across the world. To carry out this mission, he selects photographs of potential targets and approaches them in disguise, often posing as a beautiful woman in order to appeal to heterosexual men. He uses creatures called Lemures to hypnotize victims and draw out their dream mirrors, which he then inspects for any sign of Pegasus.
Unlike his companions Tiger's Eye and Hawk's Eye, who treat their targets in a more superficial and predatory way, Ojo de Pez tends to develop real, almost childlike emotional attachments to the people he pursues. His romantic nature is most clearly seen in his feelings for Mamoru Chiba, whom he falls for and even kisses, only to be gently rejected. This emotional vulnerability is central to his personality and to his later development, because it makes him the first of the Trio to begin doubting whether what they are doing is right.
His motivations are rooted in a deep longing for humanity. Midway through the series, Zirconia reveals that the members of the Amazon Trio were never truly human: they are animals enchanted into human bodies, and for that reason they have no dreams of their own. They can only keep their human forms by finding the Golden Crystal. This revelation devastates Ojo de Pez, and his desire to become a real human being and experience genuine human feelings becomes his overriding goal.
A turning point in his story comes when Usagi, the series protagonist, finds him sitting heartbroken in the rain after he learns the truth about his origins and invites him into her home. A brief friendship forms between them, and while he is inside her house he overhears Chibiusa speaking with Pegasus through a crystal sphere. Realizing that Chibiusa is the true holder of Pegasus's secret, he captures her so that the Golden Crystal can be used to grant his wish of becoming human.
Later, when Zirconia announces that only one chance remains to find Pegasus, Ojo de Pez refuses to reveal that Usagi is connected to the dream spirit, insisting that she is not the one. His rebellion against Zirconia leads the witch to order the Amazon Quartet to destroy the Trio. During the ensuing battle, a clown-like shadow creature attacks him, and Hawk's Eye shields him, suffering a fatal wound. In their final moments, Ojo de Pez confesses to Tiger's Eye that he knows the location of Pegasus's holder, and together they use a magical wish bubble to try to save Usagi rather than serve their former master. The shadow creature kills them for helping the enemy. After their deaths, their bodies revert to their original animal forms, and Pegasus appears and carries their souls to the land of Illusion, offering them the promise of rebirth as true human beings. In this way, his final acts are defined by loyalty, friendship, and sacrifice rather than by villainy.
