Description
Molly Mizuno is the civilian identity of Sailor Mercure, one of the Inner Sailor Guardians in the anime Sailor Moon SuperS. A fourteen-year-old student at Juuban Junior High, she is widely recognized as a genius, with a rumored IQ of three hundred and consistently top national exam scores. She lives with her mother, Saeko, a dedicated doctor, following her parents’ divorce; her father, a painter, lives apart and sends occasional postcards. Before meeting her future friends, Molly was a shy and solitary girl, spending most of her time studying and aspiring to become a doctor like her mother. Her classmates often misinterpreted her reserved nature as snobbery, leaving her socially isolated.
Her life changes when she is recruited by the guardian cat Luna and becomes Sailor Mercure, the Guardian of Water and Wisdom. Her personality is gentle, kind, and loyal, yet she initially struggles with insecurity and a strong need for approval from her mother, teachers, and peers. As the series progresses, especially through the fourth season SuperS, she grows more self-assured and learns to balance her academic drive with meaningful friendships. She is the most sensible and level-headed member of the team, often acting as a calming influence and a voice of reason during conflicts. She enjoys reading, chess, swimming, and secretly appreciates pop culture and romance novels, though she is embarrassed to admit it. Love letters are known to make her uncomfortable.
In Sailor Moon SuperS, Molly’s role as the strategist of the group becomes even more pronounced. She gains her Super Sailor form through the Mercury Crystal Power Make Up, allowing her to transform directly into Super Sailor Mercure. Her signature attack in this season is Mercury Aqua Rhapsody, a powerful musical attack performed with a lyre-like harp that summons a torrent of water and ice against the enemies of the Dead Moon Circus. She continues to rely on her advanced mini-computer and a visor that appears when she presses her earring, enabling her to analyze enemy weaknesses and scan for hidden threats. Her abilities are centered on water and ice, ranging from the obscuring fog of Shabon Spray to the offensive freeze of Shine Aqua Illusion.
Throughout the Dream Arc, Molly fights alongside Usagi Tsukino as Sailor Moon, Rei Hino as Sailor Mars, Makoto Kino as Sailor Jupiter, Minako Aino as Sailor Venus, and Chibiusa as Sailor Chibi Moon.
