TV-Series
Description
Ami Mizuno, known as Amy in some English adaptations, is the civilian identity of Sailor Mercury. She is a fourteen-year-old student at Juuban Municipal Junior High School who is widely recognized as a genius, often rumored to have an IQ of 300. Ami lives with her mother, Saeko Mizuno, a busy medical doctor who is often away from home due to her work. Her parents are divorced, a fact that is addressed explicitly in the series, and her father, a painter, lives separately from the family.
Ami's personality is defined by her shy and reserved nature, which unfortunately leads her classmates to misinterpret her quiet demeanor as aloofness or arrogance. As a result, she has difficulty making friends and prefers to spend her time with books, computers, and her studies. She is gentle, kind-hearted, and dislikes quarrels or seeing innocent people harmed. Ami is incredibly diligent, often spending most of her free time studying and consistently ranking at the top of national exams. Her favorite subjects are mathematics and science, and she has a love for reading, chess, and swimming. Despite her studious image, she also has an appreciation for art and popular culture, though she is sometimes shy to admit this.
Her primary motivation is to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a doctor. This goal drives her academic dedication and her desire to use her intelligence to help others. Within the Sailor Team, Ami serves as the strategist and the voice of reason. Her sharp intellect and analytical mind are crucial to the group, as she often devises battle plans and uses her abilities to analyze enemy weaknesses. While she is highly logical and rational, she is also deeply compassionate. Her loyalty to her friends and to Sailor Moon is unwavering, and she is always supportive, even if she occasionally becomes obsessive about ensuring everyone completes their schoolwork.
The friendship with Usagi Tsukino, Sailor Moon, is the most significant relationship in Ami's life. Usagi is the first person to see past Ami's shy exterior and become her true friend, a kindness Ami deeply values. Within the inner circle of Sailor Guardians, she shares a strong bond with Makoto Kino, Rei Hino, and Minako Aino, though her interactions are often more subdued compared to the more boisterous personalities of her teammates. In the first anime series, she develops a brief romantic interest in a classmate named Ryo Urawa, a boy who possesses psychic powers, though this relationship does not continue beyond his departure from Tokyo.
Throughout the series, Ami demonstrates notable character development. She begins as a very insecure girl who relies heavily on the approval of her mother and teachers. As the story progresses and she fights alongside her friends, she becomes more confident and self-assured, growing into a stronger individual both as a civilian and as a Sailor Guardian. In the Sailor Moon SuperS season specifically, her powers are enhanced when Pegasus grants the Sailor Team extra power, allowing her to transform into Super Sailor Mercury. In this upgraded form, she gains the powerful new attack Mercury Aqua Rhapsody, where she materializes a harp made of water to blast her enemies.
As Sailor Mercury, her abilities are all associated with water. Her primary role in combat is support and strategy. Her most common early attack is Shabon Spray, which creates a dense fog to obscure the enemy's vision while leaving her and her allies unaffected. She also possesses a supercomputer built into her visor or wrist device that she can use to analyze an opponent's weak points and other vital data. Her main offensive attack is Shine Aqua Illusion, a powerful blast of water that can both strike and freeze opponents. The Mercury Aqua Rhapsody attack she learns in SuperS is her most powerful technique in that story arc.
