Description
Fish Eye, known as Olho de Peixe in the Brazilian Portuguese localization, is a recurring antagonist in the anime season Sailor Moon SuperS. He is one of the three members of the Amazon Trio, a group that serves the Dead Moon Circus under the direction of Zirconia. Originally a fish living at the Dead Moon Circus, Fish Eye was granted a human form so that he could help carry out the circus's mission. That mission involves searching for Pegasus and obtaining the Golden Crystal, which the circus hopes to use to resurrect its ruler, Queen Nehelenia. To locate Pegasus, the trio hunts for humans who carry beautiful dreams, stealing their dream mirrors and trapping their victims.
In appearance, Fish Eye is a slender and effeminate young man with very long pale blue hair and blue eyes. Like his partners Tiger's Eye and Hawk's Eye, he considers young men to be his ideal romantic interests, and this preference shapes his methods. He frequently disguises himself as a woman in order to approach his targets, most of whom are heterosexual men, and he is generally convincing in these disguises. When not on a mission, he seems to genuinely enjoy participating in human activities such as ballet, modeling, and even a beauty pageant, which he won, much to the annoyance of Tiger's Eye.
Personality is where Fish Eye most clearly differs from his fellow trio members. Tiger's Eye and Hawk's Eye tend to treat their targets as simple tools for completing their mission, but Fish Eye develops what appears to be genuine affection for many of the people he pursues, often resembling a childish crush. He becomes sincerely attached to certain victims and is genuinely hurt when they inevitably reject him after he steals their dream mirror. This is most visible in his encounters with Mamoru Chiba, a kind young man for whom Fish Eye develops real feelings and whom he even kisses. Fish Eye is also the first member of the trio to begin questioning whether what they are doing is right, and this wavering loyalty puts him in serious danger when Zirconia nearly kills him as punishment. Despite these doubts, he keeps a playful and teasing relationship with his colleagues, mocking them when their missions end in failure.
Fish Eye's motivations evolve across the season. At the start, he is simply a dutiful servant of the Dead Moon Circus, carrying out his assigned role in the search for Pegasus by seeking out beautiful dreams. Over time, his emotional involvement with his targets and his growing doubts about the circus's methods create an internal conflict between his duty and his desires. His longing for genuine human connection and for an ordinary human life becomes increasingly important, shifting his role in the story from that of a straightforward enemy to a more introspective figure.
In terms of abilities, Fish Eye is a versatile opponent. He can assume both human and animal forms, reflecting his original nature as a fish. He can manipulate water and create illusions to confuse or deceive others. His usual method of attack involves summoning creatures called Lemures, which he uses to hypnotize victims and trap them inside mirrors so that he can steal their dream mirrors. His personal weapon of choice is knife throwing, although he is not very skilled at it, and this lack of skill is a frequent source of frustration for him. Crossdressing also functions as an ability of sorts, since it is central to his infiltration strategy and allows him to get close to his targets.
Fish Eye's development reaches a turning point partway through Sailor Moon SuperS when he and the other members of the Amazon Trio are drawn into Pegasus's world. There, they are offered the promise of rebirth as real humans, an outcome that directly answers the longings Fish Eye had been developing during his time on Earth. This transition brings a form of redemption to his character, allowing him to leave behind his role as a servant of the Dead Moon Circus and to experience the human life and genuine affection he had been seeking all along.
