Description
Chibiusa, who also carries the civilian identity of the small yet powerful Sailor Chibi Moon and is formally known as Princess Small Lady Serenity, is a central figure in Sailor Moon SuperS. Her true origins lie in the 30th century, where she is the daughter of Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion, the future counterparts of the teenage protagonists Usagi Tsukino and Mamoru Chiba. Despite appearing to be a child of approximately eight years old, Chibiusa is chronologically over 900 years old. This unusual age is a result of her powers as a Sailor Guardian and a descendant of the Silver Millennium having not fully awakened for centuries, causing her physical growth to pause for a very long period.
Chibiusa possesses a personality that is a unique blend of childish brattiness and a deep-seated desire to be seen as mature and ladylike. She often acts willful, spoiled, and can be quite competitive, traits most prominently displayed in her playful yet fierce rivalry with her future mother, Usagi. She frequently claims that Mamoru, her future father, is her boyfriend, doing so specifically to annoy and tease Usagi in a classic display of their sibling-like dynamic. Underneath this sometimes abrasive exterior, however, she has a very big heart. She is sweet, caring, and capable of forming profound emotional bonds, which becomes her primary strength. Her core motivation in the series' arcs is to grow into her role as a proper princess and a capable Sailor Guardian. In Sailor Moon SuperS, this desire manifests as a deep, innocent yearning for romance and her dream to become a beautiful, refined lady, mirroring her mother's own journey.
In the narrative of Sailor Moon SuperS, Chibiusa serves as a crucial bridge between the real world and the mystical realm of dreams. Her role becomes pivotal when she encounters Pegasus, also known as Helios, the guardian of the Golden Crystal and the sacred land of Elysion. Pegasus hides within the pure heart and dream of a Chosen One, and he chooses Chibiusa as his host. This connection grants her the power to transform into Super Sailor Chibi Moon, and together with Sailor Moon, she battles the members of the Dead Moon Circus. Her relationship with Helios is the most significant development for her character in this season. Their bond is tender and deeply romantic on a spiritual level, marked by mutual trust, support, and a shared responsibility to protect the dreams of others. They share a kiss, and Helios’ faith in her gives her the strength and confidence to fight, representing a major step in her emotional maturation.
Her key relationships continue to evolve during this time. Her dynamic with Usagi remains a cornerstone of the series, balancing constant bickering over minor issues with a strong, unbreakable bond of love and loyalty that surfaces when they truly need each other. Her affection for Mamoru continues, though it becomes more of a childish crush used primarily to provoke Usagi. Prior to the events of SuperS, Chibiusa formed a crucial friendship with the lonely and troubled Hotaru Tomoe, an act of kindness that saved Hotaru and later strengthens the alliance among all the Sailor Guardians. These connections ground her, even as her heart is captured by the mystical Pegasus.
As a Sailor Guardian, Chibiusa has several notable abilities. Her primary attack is the Pink Sugar Heart Attack, a heart-shaped energy blast. She also uses the Supersonic Waves and can perform combination attacks like the Rainbow Double Moon Heart Ache and the Double Moon Kick with Sailor Moon. In her enhanced Super Sailor Chibi Moon form, her uniform gains wing-like shoulder pads and longer, billowy accents, and her power increases significantly to match the threats of the Dead Moon Circus. Her guardian device is a magical, shape-shifting plush toy named Luna P, which she also uses to help in battle. Throughout Sailor Moon SuperS, Chibiusa develops from a girl seeking any dream into a determined guardian protecting the dreams of everyone else, solidifying her path toward the future princess she is destined to become.
