Description
Peke is a secondary character in the anime and manga series To Love-Ru. It is an artificial life-form, specifically a sentient costume robot built by the alien princess Lala Satalin Deviluke. Peke functions as a wearable module that generates and maintains the clothing Lala wears, and in its idle state it usually rests on top of Lala's head in the form of a hair pin. Physically, Peke has a compact round body, spiral-shaped eyes, and a pair of small wings on its back. In this resting form it serves as Lala's portable wardrobe and accompanies her almost everywhere.
Peke was created by Lala on the planet Deviluke and accompanied her when she came to Earth. From that point, Peke acts as Lala's most constant companion. Despite being a machine, Peke displays a distinct personality and a range of human-like emotions, including loyalty, concern, and occasional alarm. Peke is exceptionally devoted to Lala, and this devotion is the central trait of the character. Peke's motivation is essentially to serve its creator, keep her dressed, and support her in daily life, and it carries out this role with great dedication.
Peke's defining ability is transformation. It can change its own body into any kind of clothing, using preset designs created by Lala or by scanning and copying any outfit it has seen. Whether transformed into Lala's usual dress or into an Earth-style school uniform, Peke remains conscious and controls the clothing from within. While transformed, Peke's head appears as a small ornament somewhere on the outfit, most often as a pin in Lala's hair. Peke's main limitation is its power supply. The robot requires regular recharging, normally by sleeping overnight, and if it runs out of energy, the clothing it forms gradually dissolves until it disappears, leaving Lala without anything to wear. Because Peke is a robot, it has no original gender, and in the rare situations where it assumes a human-like form, it is able to appear as either a man or a woman.
In the story, Peke's practical role is to provide Lala with clothing and to act as a constant companion. Its presence also creates complications, most often when it loses power at inconvenient moments, and its transformation ability occasionally leads to unusual situations. In one such incident, Rito, Lala's human love interest, is temporarily merged with Peke as the result of a malfunction in one of Lala's inventions. Peke's relationships with other characters are shaped almost entirely through Lala; it interacts with the rest of the cast as an extension of Lala's daily life, and its most significant bond remains the one with its creator.
Peke does not undergo major personal development over the course of the series, as its role is primarily that of a loyal companion. However, the character's presence reflects the changing focus of the story. In the later To Love-Ru Darkness portion of the series, Lala appears less frequently, and Peke's appearances also become rarer, with the character speaking little even when it does show up. Nevertheless, throughout the franchise, Peke remains recognizable as Lala's devoted all-costume robot and one of her closest companions.
