Description
Mei Mishima, also known as MM, is the pilot of the powerful combat robot Kemeko and a central figure in the story of Kemeko Deluxe. Her background is intricately tied to the powerful technology that drives the conflict of the series. She is the daughter of Souichiro Mishima, the founder of the powerful Mishima Electronics corporation. Her life took a dramatic turn ten years before the main events, when she arrived on Earth from space with her father and her twin sister, Mai. During this time, a young Mei met and became friends with the protagonist, Sanpeita Kobayashi, and his friend Izumi Makihara. However, their time together was cut short when a powerful object known as the Nano Ball was unleashed, an event that completely erased Mei's memories of her time on Earth. In the aftermath, her dying father entrusted her with the Kemeko unit, and she was sent away, dedicating her life to a singular purpose.

In terms of personality, Mei presents a fascinating duality. When she is piloting the chubby, powerful, and aggressive robot known as Kemeko, her demeanor is bold, rough, and even confrontational as she declares herself to be Sanpeita's bride and fights off their enemies. However, this is a stark contrast to her true self. Outside of the robot, Mei (or MM) is revealed to be a tall, attractive, and notably shy and timid girl. She is extremely self-conscious and often feels she is unable to function or face the world without the protection of the Kemeko suit, leading Sanpeita to refer to her as a recluse. This shyness is rooted in the deep pain of her past, as she is constantly reminded of the memories she lost ten years ago, a loss that continues to devastate her despite keeping a journal of those happy days.

Mei's primary motivation, and the core of her role in the story, is her unwavering mission to protect Sanpeita. This is because the powerful Nano Ball, a source of limitless energy, was implanted inside his body on the day her memories were erased. She is constantly defending him from attacks by robots sent by Mishima Electronics, who seek to recover the Nano Ball from him. To stay close to him, she installs herself into his life by moving into his house and even taking a position as a teacher at his school while disguised as Kemeko. While she initially claims to have no memory of him, Sanpeita finds her deeply familiar, and she shares key physical traits with the girl from his past, including her pink hair and the bandages on her cheek. Over the course of the series, her feelings evolve from a sense of duty to genuine romantic affection, as she begins to fall in love with Sanpeita all over again.

The most significant relationship in Mei's life is with Sanpeita Kobayashi. The entire story revolves around her connection to him, both as his protector and as the girl from his lost past. Another crucial relationship is with her twin sister, Mai, who is later revealed to be the president of Mishima Electronics and the primary antagonist. Mai was the one who triggered the Nano Ball that erased Mei's memories and set the plot in motion. Their conflict forms the emotional climax of the series, where Mei must confront her sister to save Sanpeita and the world. The series also shows smaller, key relationships, such as her jealousy towards other girls who show an interest in Sanpeita, which prompts her to emerge from the Kemeko robot more often.

Mei undergoes notable development throughout the narrative. Initially, she almost never leaves the safety of her robot suit, living in isolation even while surrounded by people. As Sanpeita encourages her to be herself, she begins to come out of her shell and face the world as Mei Mishima. A major turning point comes when she learns the full truth about her past and the person who fed the Nano Ball to Sanpeita was actually her sister, Mai, pretending to be her. In the final confrontation, Mei demonstrates her growth by choosing to forgive Mai instead of killing her, showing immense emotional maturity. By the end of the story, she confesses that she has fallen in love with Sanpeita again, and the two become engaged for real, bringing the childhood promise to a happy conclusion.

Regarding her abilities, Mei is primarily known for her skill as the pilot of the Kemeko robot. Despite the robot's small and chubby frame, she operates it with incredible agility and destructive power, utilizing a vast arsenal that includes gatling guns, giant cutters, and boosters for enhanced mobility. Piloting Kemeko requires immense physical stamina, as other characters who attempt to use it become exhausted within minutes. On her own, without the robot, Mei is not a powerful fighter in a physical sense, but she is proficient with using a gun that fires sedative bullets. Her most unique ability is her exceptional singing voice, although she has a peculiar habit of only singing death metal songs while piloting Kemeko.
