TV-Series
Description
Hayami is a third-year student at the high school attended by the Minami sisters and serves as the captain of the girls' volleyball club. She is among the tallest female characters in the series and has short, brownish-blond hair and matching brownish-yellow eyes. Her eyes are almost always drawn in a closed, narrowed fashion, a visual trait reminiscent of a fox that reflects her cunning and mischievous personality. When greatly surprised or particularly interested in something, she will open her eyes fully.

Hayami has a cunning and mischievous nature, often involving her juniors in humorous situations purely for her own amusement. She possesses a firm and decisive character and is known for her eccentric behavior. A notable habit is her penchant for plying younger students, and other minors, with alcohol by convincing them it is a high-quality juice. It is implied that she is a heavy drinker herself, as she consumes this alcohol with considerable tolerance. The character is portrayed with some ambiguous romantic inclinations, including indications of being lesbian or bisexual, such as moments when she has been known to playfully interact with Kana while under the influence.

Her primary motivations are often centered on entertainment and personal convenience. She derives pleasure from watching the comedic misfortunes of those around her. A key example of this is her relationship with her volleyball club counterpart, Hosaka. Aware of his deep but unexpressed affection for Haruka Minami, Hayami constantly encourages him to confess and pursue the older Minami sister. However, she delights in the fact that Hosaka never actually follows through and gives the elaborate lunches he makes for Haruka to their intended recipient. Instead, Hayami often ends up eating these meals herself. In one instance from Minami-ke: Tadaima, she suggests Hosaka knit a scarf for Haruka, providing him with magazines and stating her own preferences, seemingly anticipating that she will receive a free scarf from his unsuccessful romantic labors. In a scene from an OVA, she attempts to dissuade Hosaka from his theatrical presentations of his cooking by claiming his food is full of ego rather than love, though she acknowledges his feelings to be strong and pure. Hayami is also a close acquaintance of Haruka Minami and is frequently plotting ways to persuade her to join the volleyball club, even going so far as to manipulate Hosaka into making the request.

Hayami does not undergo significant personal development in the traditional sense, as her role is primarily that of a static, catalyst character. Her function in the story is to instigate situations involving others, particularly the romantic subplot between Hosaka and Haruka, and to provide a source of cunning commentary and chaos among the student cast. Her abilities are largely social and psychological. She is highly perceptive, understanding the true nature of Hosaka's feelings and the dynamics of other relationships around her. She is also a skilled volleyball player and serves as an effective captain of the girls' team, showing her ability to lead and organize her peers.
