TV-Series
Description
Professor Carlton is the father of Lydia Carlton and a scholar based in London who teaches natural history at the University of London. Although he comes from a middle-class background, he often moves in upper-class circles. His academic specialty is gems and minerals, and unlike younger researchers of his day, he is interested not only in the scientific properties of his subject but also in its romantic and legendary dimensions. He prefers to spend his money on research rather than on practical comforts.

In personality, Professor Carlton is kind-hearted, eccentric, and somewhat absent-minded, frequently becoming absorbed in his studies and losing track of everyday concerns. Despite his distracted manner, he genuinely loves his wife and daughter. He fully believes in Lydia's abilities as a fairy doctor, a conviction shaped by the fact that his late wife also possessed such gifts. Lydia, in turn, trusts him deeply and often confides in him.

His motivations center on two things: devotion to scholarship and care for his family. His research into the natural world and fairy lore gives him a knowledge base that complements Lydia's practical abilities, allowing him to appreciate both the factual and the fantastical sides of their shared interests.

Within the story, Professor Carlton serves as a grounding presence for Lydia. He provides her with a home base and emotional support even when he is not directly involved in her adventures. His position as a respected academic also lends credibility to his family within society, while his understanding of legends and minerals occasionally connects to the mysteries surrounding the fairy world. He maintains a cordial but slightly wary attitude toward Edgar Ashenbert, keeping in mind the rumors that circulate about Edgar and remaining protective of his daughter's interests.

In the anime, he appears as a warm yet often distracted figure whose love for research and for his family shapes his interactions with those around him. His main notable ability is his scholarly expertise in natural history, gems, minerals, and the folklore connected to them, which makes him a useful source of knowledge even in a world where the supernatural is not always taken seriously.
