Description
In the anime Earl and Fairy, the character known as Banshee is a fairy of a specific and sorrowful type. She is a silver-gray haired being who appears in the form of a beautiful young maiden. As her name suggests, her existence is tied to the prophecy of death, a role rooted in the folklore from which she is drawn. Her primary and most defining ability is to foresee the death of a family member. This is manifested through her tears, which possess the unique property of turning into amber. When a death is imminent, she weeps, and the resulting amber tear is known as the Amber of Prophecy. An important characteristic of this enchanted amber is that it will not burn, setting it apart from ordinary amber. Upon the appearance of this tear, a death within the family she serves is destined to occur within one week.

Banshee is not a wandering spirit but is bound to a specific noble house. She serves as the personal fairy of the family of the Blue Knight Earl, and her direct mistress was a woman named Gladys. Her background is steeped in tragedy and loyalty. For a long period, her memory was sealed away alongside the amber that held Gladys’s memories, leaving her in a state of confusion and forgetfulness about her true purpose and identity. This curse of forgetfulness is directly linked to the fate of the Blue Knight Earl’s lineage. Her true nature and memories only begin to resurface when the curse upon the family’s descendants is lifted, allowing her to recall her sacred duty to the line of the Blue Knight Earl.

Within the story, her motivations are driven by this deep-seated loyalty to the rightful heir. Despite the confusion of her sealed memories, her core sense of duty proves to be unbreakable. When the main character, Edgar, seeks the proof of his identity as the Blue Knight Earl, Banshee plays a pivotal role. She is the keeper of the key to Iblis, a significant object in the quest. She explicitly refuses to acknowledge Ulysses, a rival claimant, as her master, and instead chooses to hand the key to Edgar, recognizing him as the true descendant. This act of defiance against a false master and her adherence to her original purpose define her role as a guardian of the family’s legacy.

In terms of personal relationships, she develops a notable, if subtle, fondness for the character Paul Ferman. The narrative indicates that she has a positive sentiment towards him, adding a layer of gentle emotion to her otherwise mournful existence. Her most significant relationship, however, is with Edgar, the protagonist. Her loyalty to him culminates in a profound act of self-sacrifice. Banshee possesses the unique ability to avert a death prophecy a single time by becoming a substitute for the intended victim. After her tears prophesy Edgar’s death, she chooses to take his place. This act of sacrifice is the climax of her character development, transforming her from a passive herald of doom into an active protector. As she sacrifices her life to save Edgar, her final act is to hand over the key to Iblis, completing her mission as the guardian of the Blue Knight Earl’s legacy before she vanishes in the sunlight. Her disappearance marks the end of her long, sorrowful duty.

Beyond her prophetic tears and the ability to substitute for a fated death, her other notable abilities are tied to her nature as a fairy. The tears she sheds that do not carry a prophecy of death transform into ordinary amber. The amber that does carry the prophecy is distinct in its unburnable quality. Her powers are intrinsically linked to the family she serves, and she is powerless to nullify her own predictions except through the ultimate sacrifice of her own existence.
