Description
Budoko is an Aluminum Akikan, a special being that takes the form of a young girl after her original container, a can of grape juice, is consumed. Her owner is a shy junior high school student named Misaki Miyashita, who drank the juice while attending a doujinshi sale, leading to Budoko's transformation. In her humanoid form, Budoko appears to be around eight or nine years old, with long purple hair styled into drill-shaped twin tails and a grape-shaped headdress. Her small stature belies a strong-willed and spirited personality, though she also possesses a somewhat immature side befitting her childlike appearance. She has a distinctive and humorous way of speaking that can sometimes be difficult to understand, which is described as having a short tongue.
Budoko's core motivation is her deep and affectionate bond with her timid owner, Misaki. Their relationship is emotionally intimate, with their favorite shared activity being stargazing together. This connection drives many of her actions, both positive and negative. For instance, she frequently challenges the Steel Akikan named Melon to a fight without Misaki's knowledge, demonstrating a proactive and sometimes reckless nature. Her role in the story is initially that of a rival to Melon and her owner, Kakeru Daichi, during the conflict known as the Akikan Elect, which pits Aluminum and Steel Akikans against each other. However, her position becomes more complex as the narrative progresses.
Budoko's development is marked by several significant events that test her resilience. In the original light novel storyline, she is killed in battle by Melon. She is later separated from a disappointed Misaki and revived as a test subject named RG:A (Recycle Grape: Aluminum) for an Akikan recycling project. In this state, she loses her memories and her unique way of speaking, but her feelings for Misaki remain in her heart, eventually helping her escape and reunite with her owner. The anime adaptation diverges from this fate; Kakeru intervenes during her fight with Melon, causing the fatal attack to miss and preventing her death entirely.
Later in both versions of the story, Budoko faces a new threat from a powerful antagonist known as the "strongest Akikan," a Mixed Juice Akikan capable of absorbing other Akikans. Budoko is captured and brainwashed, becoming a puppet who attacks Melon and her allies. After being freed from this control, she demonstrates significant growth by joining forces with her former rivals, Melon and Yell, in a combined energy attack that ultimately defeats the powerful antagonist. This alliance marks her transition from a simple rival to a valuable ally.
In terms of combat abilities, Budoko's powers are derived from her grape juice nature. Her primary long-range attack is called Shower grapes, where she uses a slingshot-like method to fire magic projectiles shaped like grapes, which are said to be highly acidic. She also has an explosive attack that is noted to be more dangerous than her primary one, and she can spit grape seeds in a way that she claims inflicts mental damage on her opponents.
