Description
Daitetsu Hibiki is a supporting character in Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens who serves as a close friend to the protagonist, Jin Mikuriya. As a member of his school's art department, Daitetsu possesses considerable drawing skills and is able to produce impressive impromptu artwork, which was the primary reason Jin joined the club out of admiration for his talent. Physically, Daitetsu cuts an imposing figure with a very large and tall body; he stands around 190 centimeters (approximately 6 feet 3 inches) tall even as early as his second year of middle school. He has brown hair that reaches his neck and black eyes, and his appearance is often described as looking somewhat intimidating or scary for his age.

Despite his formidable and mature appearance, Daitetsu's personality is notably kind and delicate. He has a significant fondness for cute things and, in a notable contrast to his large frame, is genuinely afraid of ghosts. This gentle nature is a recurring aspect of his character, creating a humorous gap between how he looks and how he acts. Daitetsu also possesses a remarkably vivid and runaway imagination, which frequently leads him to jump to wild and often incorrect conclusions about the situations he observes involving his friends.

Daitetsu's role in the story is primarily as a source of comedic misunderstanding and a close confidant to Jin. A pivotal event occurs on a rainy night when Daitetsu forgets his house key and decides to stay at Jin's home. While there, he overhears a private conversation between Jin and Nagi, the goddess living with Jin, and comes to the mistaken belief that Nagi is a dangerous or dark woman. This suspicion, combined with his already active imagination, leads him to develop a protective obsession over Jin. In a dramatic confrontation at school, Daitetsu publicly shouts that he cannot give up Jin, which causes everyone around him to mistakenly believe he is homosexual and harbors romantic feelings for his friend. This misunderstanding becomes a long-running comedic thread throughout the series.

His most significant relationship is with Jin Mikuriya, whom he considers his best friend. Their friendship dates back to their middle school days, when Jin first approached Daitetsu. At the time, Daitetsu had a reputation for having a bad attitude, such as leaving school early without notice. However, the reasons for his behavior were innocuous, such as oversleeping because he stayed up writing a dream diary or leaving to take care of a puppy, which led Jin to realize he was not a bully but a kind person. Daitetsu also has a strained and comedic relationship with Nagi, whom he views with suspicion, leading to several confrontations between them.

In terms of development, flashbacks to his middle school years show that Daitetsu was once a tall and somewhat intimidating figure who could have been mistaken for a delinquent, but his inherent kindness has remained a constant trait. Beyond his artistic talent, Daitetsu has demonstrated a surprising and notable ability to sing very well. In one instance, he performs a ballad with a low pitch at a karaoke room, impressing those around him, especially given that it was supposedly his first time singing.
