TV-Series
Description
Ash Landers is a character who appears exclusively in the first season of the Black Butler anime. He is an original creation for the television adaptation and does not feature in the original manga series. Ash serves as the personal butler and spokesperson to Queen Victoria, holding a position that mirrors that of Ciel Phantomhive's demon butler, Sebastian Michaelis. Because of his formal attire and duties, he is known as the White Butler, a direct contrast to Sebastian's role as the demonic servant.

In terms of appearance, Ash Landers is a tall and elegant man with flowing silver-white hair and striking amethyst eyes. His complexion is pale, and he is almost always seen in a pristine white suit paired with a purple vest, a white tie, and black gloves. He carries a thin rapier with a gold handle, which serves as his primary weapon. His overall presentation is one of refined nobility and calm authority.

Ash's personality is complex and deceptive. Initially, he presents himself as the epitome of a loyal and composed servant, acting with calm dedication to the Queen and showing a polite, if distant, interest in Ciel and his household. However, this is merely a facade. His true nature is that of a powerful angel with a fanatical and twisted obsession with purity. He harbors a deep-seated hatred for anything he deems unclean or impure, a category that ultimately includes all of humanity. As his plans unfold, his composed demeanor gives way to a manic and sadistic personality, especially during combat, revealing a profound madness that leads Sebastian to label him a fallen angel. He frequently uses the catchphrase "unclean" to justify his actions.

A core aspect of Ash's character is his dual identity as the angel Angela Blanc. He is a singular, androgynous angelic entity who can switch between a male form, Ash, and a female form, Angela, at will. While Ash is the public-facing butler to the Queen, cool and direct in his pursuit of purification, Angela often appears in other contexts, such as a maid in the Barrymore household, and is noted for having a more overtly cruel and sadistic demeanor. Despite these behavioral differences, both forms share the same ultimate goal.

Ash's primary motivation is to purify the world by eradicating all impurity, which he equates with human sin and emotion. He believes that creating a perfectly pure world justifies any means, including mass murder and manipulation. His role in the story is that of a major antagonist who orchestrates several key tragic events. He is the one who, at the Queen's behest, killed Ciel Phantomhive's parents and grotesquely reanimated their bodies as "jointed dolls". He also manipulated the grieving Queen Victoria, connecting her to the rotting flesh of her deceased husband, Prince Albert, before ultimately abandoning her to die when she no longer served his purpose. He masterminds a plot to burn down London using a demon dog named Pluto and attempts to frame Ciel for a drug trafficking scheme.

Ash's key relationships are defined by opposition and manipulation. He is the direct antagonist to Sebastian Michaelis, viewing the demon as a potential partner for a time, as they are both supernatural beings. He attempts to convince Sebastian to merge with him, a proposal that Sebastian finds repulsive and rejects. His relationship with Queen Victoria is one of exploitation; he uses her grief to further his own agenda without any genuine loyalty. He also shares a master-servant relationship with the doll-maker Drossel Keinz, whom he reanimated to serve him. His relationship with Ciel is adversarial, as he sees the young earl as an obstacle to be eliminated, and his actions are directly responsible for the foundational trauma of Ciel's life.

Throughout the first season, Ash develops from a mysterious and seemingly loyal royal attendant into a fully revealed, fanatical angel. His hidden nature is gradually exposed, and his descent into madness becomes more pronounced as his plans are thwarted. In the final confrontation, he abandons all pretense, revealing his full angelic form and engaging in a destructive battle with Sebastian. His arc ends with his death, as he is brutally defeated by Sebastian, who assumes his true demonic form to kill the fallen angel on the partially constructed Tower Bridge.

Ash possesses several notable supernatural abilities. As an angel, he has immense physical strength and the power of flight using his large white wings, whose feathers can be used as projectiles to pierce flesh. He is a highly skilled swordsman, proficient with his rapier. His most distinctive power is the ability to alter his appearance, including his face, body, and gender, at will, allowing him to assume the identities of Ash and Angela. He also has the power to manipulate human consciousness by rewriting the "magic lantern theatre," which is the projection of a person's memories. This allows him to create false pasts and manipulate how individuals perceive their own traumatic experiences.
