Description
Bardroy, often called Bard, is the chef of the Phantomhive household. He is a sturdy, rugged man of American origin, recognizable by his dirty-blond hair, turquoise eyes, perpetual stubble, and a cigarette that is almost always hanging from his mouth. His typical attire consists of a white chef's uniform with a long apron, and he often wears a pair of goggles around his neck. Before his employment at the Phantomhive manor, Bardroy lived a completely different life as a farmer. He was a peaceful man who married a woman named Joanna and had a son, living quietly until a raid on his village by Native Americans resulted in the brutal deaths of his wife and child. Consumed by grief and rage, he retaliated with extreme violence and subsequently devoted himself to war, becoming a soldier known for his remarkable survival skills and earning a reputation as an "invincible private soldier". His military career eventually left him physically and mentally exhausted. On a battlefield where he was starving and his comrades had been killed, Sebastian Michaelis appeared and offered him a position, stating that he needed a "murderer accustomed to killing." Bardroy accepted and was formally hired after demonstrating his combat abilities by defending the manor from intruders.
Bardroy's personality is a study in contrasts. He is generally laid-back, tough-minded, and acts as the de facto elder brother and leader among the younger servants, Finnian and Mey-Rin. While he may seem less serious about his daily chores compared to his colleagues, he possesses a level-headed and calm demeanor in dire situations. He is capable of making sharp judgments, giving precise orders, and focusing on a path forward rather than succumbing to panic or fear. His primary motivation is his fierce loyalty to his young master, Ciel Phantomhive. Despite having a hard time understanding Ciel due to his age and position, Bardroy respects him deeply and takes his role as a protector of the manor very seriously.
His role in the story is defined by a bizarre and spectacular contradiction: he is a chef who cannot cook. His philosophy is that cooking is an art, and art is an explosion, leading him to use military-grade weaponry such as flamethrowers, blowtorches, and explosives to prepare meals as quickly as he would on a battlefield. This approach is almost always a disaster, with Sebastian famously remarking that eighty percent of what Bardroy makes is ash and the remaining twenty percent is hazardous. His failures in the kitchen provide much of the household's comic relief and create a rivalry of sorts with Sebastian, whose perfection in all tasks, including cooking, is a source of personal frustration for him. However, when the manor is threatened, his true value becomes clear. He is an expert soldier and tactician who commands the other servants in battle, utilizing an arsenal of high-powered weapons and traps hidden within the manor to repel enemies.
Throughout the series, Bardroy's past as a soldier and a grieving husband informs his present. He suffers from survivor's guilt, haunted by the loss of his family and his fellow soldiers. His journey is one of learning to adapt to a new kind of life, where his skill set is used for protection rather than war. While he struggles with the patience required for cooking, he is committed to his duty, even putting his life on the line to protect the household, such as when he dragged his injured body to save an ally during an incident at a sanatorium. His key relationships are with his fellow servants. He acts as a big brother to Finnian and Mey-Rin, working alongside them as a tight-knit trio and coordinating their efforts in battle. He follows the directives of Sebastian, who recruited him and whose abilities he begrudgingly acknowledges, and is ultimately devoted to serving Ciel Phantomhive. Bardroy's notable abilities are almost entirely combat-related. He possesses extensive knowledge of firearms and explosives, is proficient in hand-to-hand combat, and is a skilled strategist capable of improvising weapons from everyday items and leading a small unit effectively. His greatest personal strength is his calm judgment under fire, a trait that ensures his own survival and the protection of those he serves.
