TV-Series
Description
Angelina Dalles, more widely known by her sobriquet Madam Red, is a recurring character. She is the widow of Baron Burnett, the younger sister of the late Rachel Phantomhive, and thus the maternal aunt of Ciel Phantomhive.
In terms of appearance, Angelina is a striking woman defined by the color red. She has vibrant red hair, which she keeps in a short bob, and reddish-brown eyes that complement her hair. Her entire wardrobe is a testament to her nickname; she almost always wears red clothing, including a long red coat, a red skirt and waistcoat over a white ruffled blouse, and a red hat, often carrying a red parasol.
Angelina's personality is a study in duality. To the outside world, she presents the image of a fun-loving, popular, and somewhat flirtatious socialite who enjoys parties and the company of others. She is also a dedicated and highly skilled surgeon, a profession she pursued against the wishes of her parents. However, this lively exterior conceals a deep well of trauma, grief, and a capacity for extreme violence. The tragic events of her life, including the death of her husband and unborn child and the loss of her ability to bear children, twisted her psyche, leading her to harbor a murderous rage against women she perceived as willfully discarding the ability to have children.
Angelina's motivations are rooted entirely in her personal history and losses. As a young girl, she was insecure about her red hair, which she inherited from her father and initially hated. This changed when she met Vincent Phantomhive, the man she fell in love with, who complimented her hair and compared its color to the blazing lycoris flower. Though he married her sister Rachel, Angelina buried her feelings for the sake of her loved ones. She eventually married Baron Burnett, who accepted that she loved another man. The carriage accident that killed her husband and their unborn child, and which necessitated the removal of her uterus to save her life, became the pivotal trauma in her life. Her envy and hatred were further compounded when Rachel and Vincent died in a fire at the Phantomhive Manor. Seeing other women, particularly prostitutes, seeking abortions for convenience became an unbearable insult to her own loss. Her motivation as a killer was a twisted form of vengeance, as she believed these women did not deserve the fertility she had been cruelly denied.
Angelina's role in the story is as the primary antagonist of the Jack the Ripper arc. By day, she is a respected surgeon and the doting aunt who joins Ciel in his investigation of the serial killer plaguing London's Whitechapel district. By night, she is one half of the murderous duo known as Jack the Ripper, brutally killing prostitutes and removing their wombs. She provides a stark contrast to the other aristocrats of evil, as her actions are driven not by business or political gain, but by profound emotional damage.
Her key relationships define her arc. Her love for Vincent Phantomhive, though unrequited, shaped her youth. Her relationship with her nephew, Ciel, is the most critical. She was present at his birth and adores him, seeing him as the son she can never have. This deep familial love is ultimately her undoing, as she cannot bring herself to kill him when ordered to do so. Her relationship with Grell Sutcliff is one of a partnership born of madness. Grell, a Grim Reaper, was captivated by Angelina and offered to assist in the murders, disguising herself as Angelina's incompetent butler to help her evade capture. Grell enabled and facilitated the killing spree but ultimately held no true loyalty, cruelly murdering Angelina when she hesitated to kill Ciel, deeming her an ordinary woman unworthy of the red she wore.
In terms of development, Angelina transforms from a shy, insecure girl who hated her red hair into a confident and popular public figure, only to descend into a vengeful serial killer. The narrative reveals that her cheerful persona was a mask built over years of silent suffering and loss. Her story concludes with her death at Grell's hands, a moment of tragic irony where the very affection for her family that made her human also made her a liability and led to her demise.
Angelina possesses notable abilities as a highly competent surgeon, a skill she uses both to help patients at the Royal London Hospital and to carry out her murders. While not a fighter in the supernatural sense, she is intelligent and capable of wielding a knife with lethal precision. Her true power lies in her social influence and her ability to move through high society and the slums of London without suspicion, a cover that proves effective until Ciel and his demon butler uncover the truth.
