Description
Tanaka is the house steward of the Phantomhive household and a former butler who served the family long before the arrival of Sebastian Michaelis. He is an elderly man with gray hair, a mustache, and a monocle, and he is almost always seen holding a cup of tea. He often appears in a comical, simplified form that is smaller than his normal height, and he can only maintain his full-sized appearance for a short time before reverting to this smaller state, especially if he expends too much energy.
Born into service with the Phantomhive family, Tanaka served as the head butler for Vincent Phantomhive, Ciel's father, and also attended to Rachel Phantomhive and their young son. During the attack on the Phantomhive estate in which Vincent and Rachel were killed and Ciel was taken, Tanaka was injured when he was stabbed in the back. This injury may be the reason he rarely performs physical work around the estate after Sebastian assumes the role of butler. Despite his reduced activity, he remains on staff as a steward, and he keeps a journal documenting events before and after the tragedy, a task requested by Vincent.
Tanaka is quiet and reserved, rarely speaking, and his typical response to even the most unusual situations is to smile calmly, take a sip of tea, and chuckle. Beneath this placid exterior, however, he is intelligent, experienced, and highly capable. He is deeply loyal and kind to Ciel, and he is strict when it comes to his duties. Although he appears frail and idle, he is able to deal with intruders effortlessly when the need arises.
