Description
Ozma Lee is a veteran soldier and a major character in Macross Frontier. He serves as a major in the private military company S.M.S. and is the leader of Skull Squadron, widely regarded as the company's top ace. Before his time with S.M.S., he was a pilot in the New United Nations Spacy, an earlier career that gave him considerable combat experience and shaped his disciplined approach to soldiering.
Ozma's background is tied closely to tragedy. He is the adoptive older brother of Ranka Lee, though the two are not related by blood. Eleven years before the events of the main story, a Vajra attack destroyed the 117th Large Scale Research Fleet, and Ozma was unable to protect Ranka's biological family. He adopted her afterward, but he continues to blame himself for the loss. This guilt is a defining part of his character and fuels his fierce protectiveness toward Ranka. He keeps her past and her connection to the Vajra hidden from her in an effort to shield her from the truth.
In daily life, Ozma appears laid-back and occasionally careless, with a relaxed personality that contrasts with his sharp instincts as a soldier. He is known to enjoy the music of Fire Bomber, often playing their songs at home or in his car, and he named one of Skull Squadron's battle formations after one of their songs. When the situation demands it, however, he becomes completely serious, and he holds a firm belief that a soldier's real duty is to care for both subordinates and civilians. He is respected by those under his command for being strict but fair.
His private life is shaped by his commitment to Ranka. He is somewhat overprotective of her and deliberately lies about his work, telling her that he holds a desk job in a company's personnel department so she will not worry about the dangers he faces. Their bond is one of the emotional anchors of his story, and he is willing to risk everything to keep her safe, even as she begins to discover the truth about her origins.
Ozma also has a complicated history with Cathy Glass, an officer who previously served in the New United Nations Spacy and later works alongside him on the Macross Quarter. The two had a romantic relationship in the past, which makes their current working partnership somewhat tense. He is also a mentor figure to younger pilots, including Alto Saotome, and leads Skull Squadron alongside members such as Michael Blanc and Luca Angelloni.
His role in the story extends beyond combat. As suspicions grow about the intentions of Leon Mishima, Ozma confronts him directly and is arrested by Mishima's men. He later escapes with Cathy Glass and together they discover the body of President Howard Glass, revealing that Mishima had him killed inside the Battle Frontier. This places Ozma at the center of the political conflict within the fleet as well as the military struggle against the Vajra.
As a pilot, Ozma's abilities are exceptional. He pilots a VF-25 Messiah and is known for remarkable agility even when the craft is equipped with a heavy armored pack, performing maneuvers that exceed what is expected from machines focused purely on mobility. He is also capable of engaging Vajra in close combat, demonstrating both technical skill and physical bravery. Throughout the series, his loyalty to his team, his sense of responsibility, and his struggle to balance his duty as a soldier with his role as Ranka's brother define him as a grounded and emotionally compelling figure.
