Description
Michel Blanc, also known as Mikhail or Michael Blanc, is a student at Mihoshi Academy's pilot training course and a member of the private military organization S.M.S. He serves as a second lieutenant in the Skull Squadron, piloting a blue VF-25G variant configured as a gunner and sniper unit. He is of mixed human and Zolan descent, with his grandparents being Zolan, which accounts for his notably long, thin ears. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his older sister Jessica, who later committed suicide after being disgraced by a friendly fire incident. This loss left him emotionally guarded and determined to remain independent, leading him to join S.M.S. as a sniper primarily to earn money and avoid forming close attachments.
He is a classmate and friendly rival of Alto Saotome, and is the one who coined the nickname Alto Hime, or Princess Alto. Initially skeptical of Alto's decision to join the Skull Squadron, he eventually accepts him and even encourages Alto to be more honest with his own feelings. Michel is widely known as a ladies' man, and his personal motto is to always acquire his target, whether that target is an enemy or a woman. This confident, flirtatious demeanor, however, masks a deep-seated shyness and a fear of emotional intimacy. He regularly wears corrective glasses in daily life.
He shares a long-standing childhood friendship with Klan Klang, a Meltrandi warrior. Despite Klan's clear feelings for him, Michel uses the excuse of her Miclone appearance being too youthful to avoid confronting his own emotions, a pattern that reflects his reluctance to commit. He is also one of the more perceptive characters in the story, quietly observing the complex love triangle between Alto, Ranka Lee, and Sheryl Nome, and later piecing together the insidious schemes of Grace O'Connor.
In combat, Michel is an exceptional marksman, relying on precision and long-range tactics with his customized VF-25G. During the Vajra war, he demonstrates considerable skill and bravery. In the television series, he is fatally wounded by a stage-two Vajra while protecting Klan Klang in the S.M.S. macronization chamber, uttering a confession of love before being thrown into space and presumed dead. In the film adaptations, his fate is different: during the final battle on the Vajra homeworld, he leaps to Klan's aid with the words I will not let you die alone, and both survive the encounter. His role is that of a skilled pilot, a teasing yet loyal friend, and a character whose outward bravado gradually gives way to genuine vulnerability, particularly in his relationship with Klan.
